What a ridiculous comment. As bad as the tribune has become, the city is a better place with it than without it.

Happened to be watching the newest episode of Gaming Historian on YouTube, and who should pop up on the 1988 consumer electronics beat but one Phil Vettel of the Chicago Tribune.

This was a Nintendo peripheral one stood on that looked like a pogo ball. While the article mentions it in passing, it's a great loss we don't have his firsthand review of the Power Glove. I am now involuntarily picturing the cross-application of both such haptic technologies to the kitchen.

The Chicago Tribune is naming Louisa Chu and Nick Kindelsperger as its food critics, following the departure of Phil Vettel in January after 31 years as the city’s definitive authority on dining.

The budget-driven exodus at the Tribune continues this week with several more long-time columnists departing. As the gutting rolls on, I'm beginning to question whether I can live without this subscription. My initial thought is yes. I think I can.

We only do digital subscriptions. On the day that the sale closed, I canceled my subscription and told them why. We are quite happy with a combination of the Sun Times and Washington Post.

It is a shame since I have been a Tribune subscriber for most of the last 50 years. However, it is what it is.

Yeah, I have a digital-only sub to the Trib but not sure I'll be keeping it. It's not exclusively a matter of the specific people who've left as much as it's about the fact that it now barely resembles what I signed up for in the first place. Sign of the times. :(

    It's a full-on bloodletting . . .

Almost 40 journalists are leaving the Chicago Tribune’s newsroom as part of a voluntary buyout program announced late last month by Tribune Publishing.

The buyouts were offered to nonunion employees two days after hedge fund Alden Global Capital completed its $633 million acquisition of Tribune Publishing, the owner of the Chicago Tribune and other metropolitan daily newspapers. After negotiations with the Chicago Tribune Guild, the program was offered to the newsroom’s union employees.

More than a dozen nonunion editors and support staff in the Tribune’s newsroom took buyouts. Another 24 newsroom employees who are members of the guild applied for and were accepted for buyouts, according to Greg Pratt, a Tribune reporter and guild president.

He said applications by three other members were denied, and the union hopes the company reconsiders their applications. After the departures, the guild will represent more than 80 newsroom employees, Pratt said.

Not surprisingly, the above story had no byline. There was no one left there to write it. :(

As a daily print subscriber (I am a dinosaur), this has been especially painful. I am a fan of several of the columnists who have asked and received the buyouts. They have pointed out that there are still talented writers and staff to support. Louisa and Nick for example. So I will keep some form of subscription, though likely dropping the daily print. You know who I worry about more? My delivery guy. All of these people cancelling their subscriptions won't help him. I want to keep some form of the print edition going so I can send back the prelabeled holiday card with a generous tip.

As a fellow dinosaur print subscriber I also feel the pain. The wife and I really like to read a print paper in the am. We have a print subscription to The Financial Times [UK] for world news and a different perspective, but we want a local paper also.

To us dinosaurs the Alden takeover is a huge meteor plowing into the Mayan peninsula and the loss of so many journalists is the mushroom cloud that precedes the firestorm.

Good point about the delivery person. I thought of switching to the Sun-Times but after picking up a newsstand copy that doesn't look like such a good idea. They have a limited number of journalists who are trying hard, but lack the needed resources.

Perhaps the current Sun-Times is the ghost of Christmas future for the Tribune. When the Trib descends to that level I'll make the switch.

It's getting closer to having this rat abandon the sinking ship: this morning's paper had no Business section. I thought perhaps it was an error, but the online edition doesn't have one either, not even a paragraph explaining the cause. Business often carries restaurant news (although as human interest it ends up in A&E about as often).

Yeah, I had to call a few times before their system recognized me saying "manage subscription," even though that was exactly one of the choices I was offered. If a caller was on the fence about their subscription, this process was sure to make cancelling the preferred option. Just the fact that I had to call to cancel and couldn't do that online was annoying. But allowing online cancellations would make it harder to offer the caller the barrage of discounted incentives to stay.

FWIW, my cancellation went through without much trouble. They had charged me for another month yesterday, but I got them to refund that charge. I'm pretty certain that had I not requested that refund, they wouldn't have offered.

The Chicago Tribune has named its longtime theater critic, Chris Jones, as editorial page editor. Jones, 57, who has been the newspaper’s chief theater critic and a leading voice for Chicago’s cultural scene for nearly two decades, will take the helm of a downsized editorial board July 12, seeking to write a new chapter for himself and the city’s most influential opinion platform.

I'm sorry, but nobody owes Alden Global Capital a molecule of restraint in accessing their product by whatever means necessary. If they want to require payment to read the product they've intentionally deteriorated, then come up with a tech solution to guard against "outline.com". Otherwise, nobody should feel at all bad about playing them for the free read.

More than didn't love it. Kindelsperger didn't hold back on pointing out dishes that were good (summary: anything Croatian) and those that were lackluster (summary: anything else). He also took a poke at diners jamming Rose Mary's reservation book solely on its Top Chef cred. And he skipped a long eulogy for Spiaggia.

Kindelsperger seems to have kept a lot of his regular-guy cred from years on the "best Chicago hot dog", "best fries", "best cheap beer" etc. beat. Bravo. One thing to like about the new Alden Trib.

Now a couple things not to like: 1. The paper edition didn't include last Wednesday's National Hot Dog day hot dog stand roundup. It was online only.
    2. This Wednesday featured no Features section. It's now lumped in with Nation and World and Business, which had been lumped in with Sports during a year when there were no sports.

They didn't know who he was. And I doubt if their customers are in the neighborhood they care.

It just means those of us who will travel for food may decide not to go there. And the owner is probably fine with that also.
