The Nobel Prize week is a pretty big deal here in Stockholm. It speaks to the nerdy sides of many Swedes and adds a little glitz and glam as well as a little international attention to this normally dreary, pre-Christmas time of the year.

Some enterprising journalist enlisted Chat GPT to take a stab at guessing this year's much-anticipated (and very secret) banquet menu.

    Article (in Swedish): https://www.svd.se/a/EQ1q7j/jacob-holmstrom-och-annie-hesselstad-gor-mat-pa-nobelfesten

The Chat GPT menu (Google Translated) -

    Starter:
Creamy lobster soup with a hint of saffron and fresh herbs. Served with a salad of tender leafy vegetables and edible flowers. Accompanied by small garlic bread toasts

    Main course:
Rosemary and garlic marinated beef fillet, perfectly cooked medium rare. Served with a red wine sauce and truffle oil. Sides include Hassleback potato, roasted vegetables and spinach au gratin.

    Dessert:
Chocolate truffle cake with a raspberry compote core. Topped with a thin layer of gold flakes and served with raspberry ice cream. A side of caramelized almond slivers for textural contrast.

The pastry chef was charitable when reviewing the dessert. "This sounds so tasty!" "However, I react to the almonds, you try to eliminate as many allergens as possible in these contexts. Almonds, gluten, lactose and gelatin disappear immediately. And the gold, it will be too expensive for so many guests."

The head chef, less so. "Good menu, but not really my style." When asked if it is "Nobel worthy?" - "20 years ago, maybe."

Thanks for an interesting post! Unfortunately I can't read Swedish and Google Translate apparently couldn't break the paywall and show the full article. Did the author ask ChatGPT to guess the menu? Or to suggest a menu?

The chef's comments point to the great flaw in the current state of the AI art: It can only synthesize ideas based on ones that already exist rather than create new ones. It's unable to suggest, for example, tureens of cream of artificially created chicken with floating lingonberry-laden pastry Viking longboats.

The author asked ChatGPT to suggest a Nobel banquet dinner menu for 1250 guests.

    Last night's official menu:

Yellow beetroot baked with seaweed and salt and a cream made from seaweed from Sweden’s west coast. Served with buttermilk and dill-seed plus sturgeon caviar from Strömsnäsbruk.

Cod loin stuffed with king crab, served with a kohlrabi roll and a potato dumpling filled with cod and king crab, accompanied by pickled onions with mushrooms. Served with winter vegetables and pickled summer vegetables, accompanied by a grilled blue mussel sauce.

Baked chocolate cream with a compôte made of lingonberries from Mockträsk outside Boden, flavoured with tar* syrup. Served with a chocolate sablé and lingonberry toffee, accompanied by meringues and cream made of lingonberries and a fresh crème fraiche parfait.

I, for one, will not be welcoming our new AI overlord chefs. Yet...

    Hi,

I'd say the AI menu is playing safe with trendier and more commonly know food and preparations.

The real menu is pretty fantastic with combinations I did not expect: King crab stuff cod loin served with a king crab and cod stuffed potato dumpling. Highlighting the provenance of the seaweed, sturgeon caviar and lingonberries was so lovely to contemplate.

Oh to be there to try it for ourselves, that is the dream.

So nice to hear from you!

    Regards,
