Almost 3 lbs of bananas today. Only about 1/2 was eaten, though, the rest was just sort of chewed in a way that made the objects inedible by humans. When I went to Strack and Van Til this evening to buy more (not for the dog) they were out. How can they be completely out of bananas? (well, they did have about a dozen really pathetic looking organic ones, one of which was being used by a small child as a drumstick, so we left them there.

    Sigh.

Yesterday Romi ate 1/2 of my cherry tree. He couldn't reach the cherries so he jumped up and pulled the branches off the tree. It is a young and small tree, and now it is smaller. I had hoped to harvest enough cherries to make maybe 1 cup of jam. Now, that won't happen.

I'm waiting for the first LTH report of a toad-sucking dog.

    Warning--disgusting photo below

    Image
This is also big news in Australia, were dogs frequently ingest the invasive cane toad which secrete powerful bufotoxins when stressed. There have been reports of toad addiction, although the toxin frequently proves fatal.

This cane toad, nicknamed "Spew", spent 40 minutes in a dog's stomach before vets managed to get the pup to spit him up.

Angler, who I have had to convince to eat raw meat instead of his crappy kibble, apparently loves fruit of all kinds. Strawberries, apples, watermelon, canteloupe. He adores shoes and wine corks. He waits patiently by the stove for a taste of garlicky spinach. But meat? PFUI!

    Public Service Announcement:

Here's a list of stuff you shouldn't feed your dog. Garlic is included on it, but really, onions are worse for them, and even moreso in cats. (When cats eat them, not when a cat with onions is eaten  )

Depending on the size of the dog, a little garlic probably won't hurt them.

Oh, I know. But I figured a hint of cooked garlic on a wilted spinach leaf probably wouldn't hurt an 85-pound dog :D

My kitty likes to chew pineapple leaves. He's so totally infatuated with them that I have to hide pineapples when I bring them home. When he notices them, way up on the top shelf of our dark pantry, he gives us sad kitty-cat eyes and meows a mournful cry, then looks back and forth from us to it and back until we get the picture. I called the vet about whether this is harmful to cats, and they didn't know, but they recommended keeping him away since the sharpness of the leaves could be dangerous. He doesn't really seem to want to eat them, just chew gently, stick his face in the center, and snuggle them. But he refuses to eat the fruit.

Yesterday morning I awoke to find that Jupiter (the more intelligent of my two, who sadly only uses his brains for evil) had defeated the kitchen barrier AND the "dog-proof" garbage can, and had eaten...everything. He ate bananas off the counter, skins and all, he ate cat food from her bowl, he dragged everything from the garbage and ate whatever was food, had been food, had once contained food, looked like food, or had been in proximity to food. In other words, se comió todo. I got my revenge when I fed him rice and yogurt for breakfast instead of his usual chicken to calm his tummyache - ha ha, dog. You play, you pay.

A friend suggested that he should start earning his keep by testing out supposedly dog-proof items for companies. Because I don't know upon what info they base their claims, but it sure as hell isn't after subjecting their stuff to a wily, hungry greyhound.

A few weeks ago, our dog Paco climbed up on our kitchen counter and ate an entire bag of dried apricots. He spent the rest of the day throwing up. The apricots had rehydrated, returned to approximately normal size and the result was just . . . heinous.

My cat is so obsessed with the bathtub, most of her days are spent sitting in it, or else perching watchfully by the bathroom door, waiting for someone to walk in. Then she launches herself into the tub at top speed, and whines until the water is turned on. Every creature needs a purpose, I guess.

Kitty used to eat bugs too. Those were the days. He'll still eat silverfish, I assume because they taste like fish. He once ate a moth off the corner where the wall meets the ceiling because I was cowering in fear. Now he sees a bug, meows at it, and looks at us like, are you gonna get that?

Loki's been eating stupid stuff on a regular basis (lip balm, dental floss, etc), but today's was fun: he dragged an 11.5 pound bag of rice 20 feet, broke into it, and had a little nosh. Rice grains in his water, on his chin, all over the floor. I don't think he actually enjoyed it... he's just an idiot.

Today Emma licked "stainless steel cleaner" off the fridge and yesterday she ate part of a used sponge. She didn't take huge bites, luckily, just delicately tore off small bits from the part that had some food remnants on it.

Not wants to eat but ATE...

First outing with my brand new Thomas Keller Ad Hoc cookbook.
C&D Farms pork tenderloin purchased this morning.
Carefully brined for four hours in a rosemary, garlic, bay leaf, peppercorn bath per Keller's instructions.
Waiting out the 30 minutes at room temp prior to stuffing with a fennel/fig spread and pan sauteeing.
Left the room for 10 minutes.
Returned to find the paper towel wrap on the floor and a happy but guilty looking dog.
The dumbass is me for leaving the room without securing the dog.
I ate boring pasta (with a bit of C&D "better than bacon" that perked things up a little bit).
RIP lovely tenderloin. Contributions in lieu of flowers may be sent to C&D for the rebuilding of their barn which was totaled in a fire on Monday night.

Yes, both of ours, too. The kitty sauna is wildly popular in the winter months.
Of course, drinking the water out of the bath tub may be simply a necessity of convenience. There must be some malfunction in their visual cortex that results in them determining that the indoor equivalent of the outdoor sparrows hanging out on the birdfeeder are rolls of toilet paper. It's become a recurring occurrence in our house to hear the slam of a cabinet door from the other room and then see one of our cats dash across our field of vision with an entire of roll of toilet paper in its mouth, just before scampering upstairs to find a quiet secluded spot in which to savor its kill. Our adorable little kitties leave a gruesome paper carcass for us to find days later.
I hate kettle cooked chips. It takes too much effort to crunch through them.
