    Hi-

    New to the forum.

I have this memory from my childhood, in the 60s, of going to a restaurant with my family, and there was a big stuffed blue swordfish mounted on the wall. The restaurant would have been in the north west suburbs, probably near Park Ridge or Niles or Northbrook. My dad thinks it might have been Allgauer's Fireside Inn on Lincoln. I'm thinking it could even have been the Wagon Wheel. Anybody out there who can identify my fish?

    JohnO1961,

If you look at my website, chicagopc.info, under Restaurants, go down to the newer section of restaurants and look at the Allgauer's card. On the right side of the one card, there is a fireplace and what appears to be a large stuffed fish over it. It looks more like a shark, though. Maybe this is what you remember?

    Thanks.

I did see that card and for a moment I thought I had found it, but 1) I don't think we ever went to the restaurant on Ridge road and 2) I know it wasn't a shark. We went to the restaurant several times and I remember being really interested in this giant blue swordfish. My kids were watching a cartoon last night that featured a swordfish and this memory came flooding back.

Love the postcards, by the way.

Any chance it was the Captain's Quarters on Milwaukee, in unincorporated Northbrook? It has a huge, blue swordfish mounted on the wall -- and it's only a block or two from the Allgauer's on Milwaukee.

    Premium content from today's Trib:
In honor of Taste of Chicago, running Wednesday through Sunday, let's take a look at the city's savory restaurants and their sometimes unsavory customers. Eat it up:

1/ Charlie Trotter, the influential Chicago restaurateur who died last year, once ordered his waitstaff to wear double-sided tape on the soles of their shoes so they would pick up carpet lint while they delivered the food.

2/ About a century ago, when Cook County Jail was on the Near North Side, a nearby restaurant would supply 25 to 50 meals a day to inmates who could afford them. Those condemned to death got their last meal for free. The eatery was known as the Noose Coffee Shop. . . .

Interesting column. I was thinking about my personal restaurant history:

First restaurant memories: The Hut in Skokie (later Corner Hut), Cock Robin
Growing up: Carson's Ribs in Skokie, Mandarin Village in Northbrook, Jake's Ribs in Northbrook
College: Dave's Italian Kitchen, Pine Yard, Los Magueyes
First House & job: Silk Road, in Niles, Pita Inn (every Friday for years)
    Second House: Taqueria Morelos, Monica's
What is patriotism, but the love of good things we ate in our childhood?

OK, Joel, I'll bite, and seeing we're both from the same neck of the woods it should be interesting, all departed destinations:

First sit-down restaurant: Mr. Ricky's (named after Rich Melman by his father), Skokie
First fast food: Bay's (donuts plus @ Howard & Lincoln)
    First buffet: Obie's (Touhy/Kostner)
First Chinese: Nankin (later worked delivery at Ah Fong)
    First pizza: Pinocchio's (Main/Tripp)
First drive-in w/carhops: Richard's (Lincoln Ave. near Pratt near the original Lou Malnati's)

A couple other things I remember about dining at an early age--my dad took me to a ton of Blackhawk games from the time I was young as he had season tix and my mom would rather stay home. When we would grab a quick bite it was always at Jumbo John's (later called Capizzi's) at Grand/Damen, where you'd walk in, grab a bottle of pop from the cooler and order a slice of pizza or spaghetti or mostaccioli. In and out in about 30 minutes max, I thought that was exotic, until one night I remember my dad's friend Dave wolfing down a combo with red sauce, the juice running down his arm--that was wild. He was also our 'muscle' when parking near the Stadium on one of the side streets and neighborhood boys would 'watch' our car for a price, usually fifty cents or a buck.

But I remember one memorable night--3/12/66--when we pre-gamed with a bunch of other people--I was the only kid--at Barney's Market Club (named after owner Barney Kessel--"Yes, Sir, Senator!") at Randolph/Halsted. I had steak like the others and Bobby Hull broke the 50-goal season record later that night!

Memories of sports & food, intertwined!

Just wondering if this thread is still active? Any of the old members here still remember me? I have a website of Chicago postcards, and used to keep you updated on new restaurant cards I uploaded. Haven't posted here in a LONG time! My Chicago postcard website was beginning to malfunction, being built on an outdated platform.

I have totally rebuilt the website on Wordpress, and have uploaded lots more restaurant postcards since my last post here, too many to list.

I am in the process of getting a new batch ready, will keep you updated. BTW, you can get to my website two ways; http://www.chicagopc.info, or http://www.chicagopostcards.info.

If it is old(er) color postcards | matchbooks from old(er) Chicago venues (restaurants | hotels), you will do very well delving into John Chuckman's Chicago Nostalgia weblog (on my bookmark page which not enough of you click on ).
I have found there numerous transit photographs, including ones never reproduced in Central Electric Railfans' Association books, on this site.

Hi, it's been a while! Life took a very strange turn a while back, and some things got lost in the shuffle. I am still maintaining my website, chicagopostcards.info, and have added an Instagram account, @chicagopostcards, where I post 5 postcards a week from my collection. Of special interest here, I always post a restaurant card on Friday, alternating between old and more modern restaurants. Check it out!

I used to post lists of my latest restaurant card additions, I will try to be more diligent about that. In case you forgot, on my website, I have categories of restaurants, but I also list some large eating establishments under Entertainment /Music /Dancing /Dining. If a restaurant is in a hotel, it may be with the hotel, also. Places like catering halls, banquet facilities, etc., may be under Retail /Small Businesses.

Thanks, Cathy2! Yes, we have stayed well, despite some family members having been virus tested 3 times due to exposure to people who later tested positive! We just had one of life's curveballs thrown at us, when we were expecting a fat, slow one right over the plate! You know how that is.

Thought I would post an update to start the new year! To address the obvious subject, my wife and I, my 88 year old mom, and most of my extended family have had the virus, and all came through great, with no hospitals involved! Not to start a political debate, but I live in an area where precautions are more a political issue than a common sense solution, so the virus has run rampant.

Anyway, I have added more restaurants to my website, here is a list of the most recent.

    Fritzel's
    Horn Palace
    Le Petit Gourmet
    Nielsen's
    The House of O'Sullivan

Sorry I missed the last time I updated. I have a lot of things I have been juggling, and it is easy for things to fall through the cracks.

Here's hoping for a much calmer New Year.

    The Happy Invention
The History and Significance of Picture Postcards

    Image

Highland Park Historical Society will host ‘ The Happy Invention: The History and Significance of Picture Postcards’ with Katherine Hamilton-Smith on February 24, 2021 at 7:00 pm via Zoom. This event is presented as part of the Illinois Humanities Road Scholars Bureau outreach.

The first picture postcards were published for the 1889 Paris Exposition, celebrating the completion of the Eiffel Tower. In America, the first such postcards were printed for the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago, making Illinois the birthplace of the American picture postcard. Since those flowery Victorian originals, uncountable numbers of postcards of every aspect of life have been printed, depicting train stations and bandstands; street views and cartoons; ads for products and services; social history, both whimsical and dark; and everything in between. An early mention of postcards is in the 1870 diary of a Welsh curate, who called them “a happy invention.”

In 2016, the world’s largest public collection of postcards and related materials, the Curt Teich Postcard Archives, was given to the Newberry Library by the Lake County Forest Preserve District. Katherine Hamilton-Smith, the founding curator of the Teich Archives, presents a look at the documentary power and significance of picture postcards. She touches on the Curt Teich Company of Chicago, the role Illinois played in the history and development of postcards, and on the picture postcard as a cultural icon.

Katherine Hamilton-Smith, the founding curator of the Curt Teich Postcard Archives for the Lake County Forest Preserve District, was responsible for creating and developing the archives. She managed its growth, working with private collectors and other institutions to create the unparalleled assemblage that was acquired by the Newberry Library in 2016 and is now one of the Newberry’s 11 Core Collections. Ms. Hamilton-Smith is currently Director of Public Affairs & Development for the Forest Preserve District.

Admission is free. For further information or a zoom link, please contact the Highland Park Historical Society: 847.432.7090 or archives@highlandparkhistory.org.
