I find it odd that there doesn't seem to be a investigation of the sanitation practices of the sandwich places; after all, if there are no contaminated sprouts anywhere but Jimmy John's, shouldn't they be checking what happens to the sprouts once they get to the sandwich places?

The likelihood that there was simultaneous contamination at multiple locations of the same restaurant in a number of states is next to nil. They may share common distribution, so that's a possibility, but at store level, not likely.

Distribution would be where I would look...I can't imagine that the sprouts go directly from the supplier to the restaurants.

However, sprouts are tricky, can go off at any time, and I'm willing to believe the FDA...but I hope they are doing more than just adding up the numbers.

Gills Onions recalled 2,360 pounds of diced red onions because of possible listeria contamination, the California-based company said Saturday.

The recalled onions were distributed to retailers in Canada and retailers and distributors in California, Oregon, Washington, Arizona, Idaho, Texas, Illinois, Michigan, Arkansas, Ohio, Tennessee, New Jersey, Georgia and Florida.

Never buying prechopped onions, I am glad I have little to fear.

Federal authorities are warning consumers not to eat certain bagged salads from Jewel-Osco, Aldi and Hy-Vee as they investigate an outbreak of Cyclospora that has sickened 76 people in the Midwest.

Jewel-Osco and Hy-Vee over the weekend recalled their store-branded packaged garden salads, which are manufactured by Fresh Express, the Food and Drug Administration announced Monday. The agency said Aldi reported it removed its Little Salad Bar Garden Salads from store shelves.

HelloFresh Kits Could Be Linked to E. Coli Outbreak

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) is issuing a public health alert due to concerns that ground beef products in HelloFresh meal kits may be associated with Escherichia coli (E. coli) O157:H7 illness. A recall was not requested because the products are no longer available for purchase.

The meal kits containing ground beef for this public health alert were shipped to consumers from July 2-21, 2022. The following products are subject to the public health alert:

    10-oz. plastic vacuum-packed packages containing “GROUND BEEF 85% LEAN/15% FAT” with codes “EST#46841 L1 22 155” or “EST#46841 L5 22 155” on the side of the packaging.

The ground beef packages bear “EST.46841” inside the USDA mark of inspection and on the plastic ground beef package.

FSIS, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and state public health partners are investigating an outbreak of E. coli O157:H7 and raw ground beef is the probable source of the reported illnesses. Traceback information identified that multiple case-patients received ground beef produced at establishment M46841 and distributed by HelloFresh in meal kits from July 2-21, 2022. Traceback of materials used to produce the ground beef is ongoing and FSIS continues to work with suppliers and public health partners on the investigation.

FSIS is concerned that some product may be in consumers’ freezers. Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them. These products should be thrown away.

foodmanufacturing.com wrote:Kerry Inc. will pay the largest criminal penalty for a food safety conviction in history.

A major food manufacturer will pay more than $19 million to resolve allegations stemming from a salmonella outbreak five years ago.

Kerry Inc. on Friday pleaded guilty to one count of distributing adulterated cereal — a misdemeanor — before an Illinois federal court.

Authorities in 2018 traced an outbreak of salmonellosis to Kellogg’s Honey Smacks cereal produced at a Kerry plant in Gridley, Illinois.

Prosecutors said Kerry employees failed to properly address dozens of positive salmonella tests at the Gridley plant between 2016 and 2018.

The plant’s quality assurance director last year pleaded guilty to three misdemeanors stemming from the case.

More than 130 illnesses were eventually linked to the recalled Honey Smacks cereal.

The $19.2 million in fines and forfeitures represents the largest criminal penalty following a food safety conviction in history.

$19M seems small for a record. But I suppose those 130 victims will sue, making the eventual cost to the perpetrator much higher.

This also helps to explain how most cereal is "distributed by" the big players instead of "manufactured by." A way to avoid liability?
