I don't believe we've ever had a gathering at Hackney's. I'm sure the minions will correct me if I'm wrong. Let's kibbitz over some burgers and onion loaf.

Please note the time for the gathering.

    Hi,

This is a place that does not take reservations.

Tentatively, yes from my side. I plan to go, but who knows what might blow up on my side.

I will be there but will have to check the menu. A twice-deep-fried Hackney's burger and onion loaf would not be kind to my GI system.

I should be able to make it. Ironically I just ate there last weekend for the first time in years. Never have had the twice deep fried burger.

Amazingly, my schedule isn't yet booked up on that date. I'm blocking the time, but there's a good chance it'll get clawed back.
Yet another reason why I should just freakin' retire already.

I compliment our Esteemed Coordinator (sincerely!) on an inspired choice. But I don't know yet if I can make it; depends on work that week.

It has been ages since I've been! I've blocked out the time on my work calendar but that doesn't guarantee I'll be free

Despite the fact that it’s not Evanston Lunch Group, Moetchandon and I would like to join, to demonstrate love for Hackney’s - especially the patio at the Harms location.

Assuming a particular member of the LTHNLG is on the guest list, we’ll be dining indoors.

That's good to know. However, very often, if you phone a place that doesn't take reservations and explain that you will be arriving with a large party (e.g. ten or so) at a specific time, they will set up for it, essentially treating it like a reservation.

Thank you for the schooling. A friend's husband has been very active with his university alumni group. Whenever it was lunch at Hackney's he showed up early to corral the number of tables needed. I believe they had an early start or otherwise they would be scattered.

If we end up scattered, well you now know why. I will be glad to be wrong.

It was a suggestion, intended to be helpful. If it works there (as it does in some places), great. If it doesn't, no harm done. Either way, no offense was intended, and none should be taken.

I had too much work today too to make it. I wonder if anyone ordered the bison burger and what they thought of it.

It was nice to see everyone and share another good meal. Glad to see Hackney's onion rings are still great, especially when ordered "crisp and loose".

We took over one end of the dining room:

    Hi,

    I enjoyed my burger today.

I have to ask how much a pop costs first. It was $3.25! I can live without a Coke, though it sure pairs well with their burger.

The fried onions were just outstanding and even better with some salt!

    Nice to see everyone!

    The fries too, surprisingly.

Nice to see that at least one old stand-by is still firing on all cylinders. I remember being in that very room nearly 50 years ago with my HS buds, trying to be cadgy and convince the waitress to serve us beer on tap. I think it was Special Export in the day, the G. Heileman 'boutique brew'. HA!

Great lunch, new/old faces, major kibbitzing. EC was somewhat strident, trying to advise me on how to eat. I use fork & knife when the food gets messy. Period. He should try it sometime.

In the real-time nostalgia, we couldn't help but focus on Skokie's Dempster St. between Crawford and McCormick. What's there now, what used to be there back to the 1960's, was it good then or now.

I think $3.25 is a very typical price for a soft drink at a restaurant charging $16 for an 8-ounce cheeseburger. Not at all exorbitant.

I didn't catch much of that conversation. Did you mention Sam & Hy's? :)
