Relatively new, Estación is the latest offering from Skokie’s well-regarded Libertad restaurant group. Under head chef Mark Mendez (formerly of Carnivale, and then his own restaurant Vera), “our passionate team takes pride in presenting authentic Puerto Rican cuisine in its purest form, offering a dining experience that pays homage to the rich culinary heritage.”

    So let’s give it a try Sunday, January 28, 2024 at 5:30.

As usual, the more the merrier (especially in case you haven’t had enough merriment over the holidays). That’ll give us great ordering power; a chance to sample lots of offerings that you wouldn’t get with just a two or four person group.

Also as usual, some of us may be exchanging single-serve foodstuffs — which are handy on those nights when, rather than actually cooking, you’d prefer to pull something out of the freezer and re-heat it for dinner. (Exchanges made by other LTHers are usually pretty good.) Details on exchanging are here, but no one is expected to exchange. Just come for the camaraderie and good food.

Estación is located on a strip of Howard Street in south Evanston that has been developing its culinary scene over the past decade or so. It also includes joints like brewpub Peckish Pig, Jamaican restaurant Good To Go and (sadly, closed on Sundays) GNR Ward Eight.

    Attendees so far:
nr706 + Albóndigas de Ricota to exchange
    Cathy2 + French Onion Soup
    JoelF + SueF
    GAF
    Moetchandon

    Hope to see you there!

    I am in for dinner.
Toast, as every breakfaster knows, isn't really about the quality of the bread or how it's sliced or even the toaster. For man cannot live by toast alone. It's all about the butter. -- Adam Gopnik

For my exchange, I'll be bringing Albóndigas de Ricota. (Note: no one needs to bring something to exchange, unless they'd like some of this to take home.)

For those of us not fluent in Spanish, those are Argentine Ricotta Balls. :)

Reservation under “Tom Keith.” They mentioned that parking is available in the Popeye’s lot across the street if street parking is tight.

I have a bit of an upset stomach (not so good for spicy food) and that coupled with the -6 degree temperature, I think that I need to cancel for tonight. I'm sorry as I do like PR food. We were in Rincon Xmas 2022. Enjoy.

I am not free Sunday Feb. 4, but other Sundays, I will be free.

Unfortunately, (or maybe fortunately), the consensus seems to be in favor of rescheduling this dinner to another day when the temperature doesn't have a minus sign in front of it. Watch this space to see what we figure out.

For me, any Sunday except Feb. 4 works. Estacion seemed like a good choice.

We'll reschedule for January 28, still 5:30 pm. Everything else above still applies. As always, more folks are welcome.

    Hi,

Just finished enjoying nr706's Albóndigas de Ricota .

This recipe made it onto two Serious Eats year end lists for 2023:
    - The Most Popular Recipes We Published in 2023
    - The Serious Eats Team's Favorite Recipes of 2023

I had seen it a few months ago and it has been on my personal list to try. Thankfully nr706 beat me to the punch.

This is an outstanding delicious recipe. I look forward to making these someday soon.

    Regards,
    Cathy2
