Just a reminder that Pierogi Fest is July 27-29 in Whiting, Indiana. One of the most interesting fests in Chicagoland and it is right over the border. Beer and Pierogi's YUM!
If you are still hungry you will be driving past Phil Smidts and Delicioso y Sabroso. If it is too hot to eat pierogis outside drive a mile south and cool off with great Polish food at the Cavelier Inn or mexican at El Taco Real.

Whiting celebrates its German heritage at Oktoberfest
The festivities run from 11 a.m. until 10 p.m. Saturday,Oct 8th. You can come and decorate a pumpkin, take a hayride, be entertained with live music (there will be German oompah there at the opening), play bingo, peruse arts and crafts items, try your hand at the beanbag toss, take advantage of great sales at our local merchants and chose "mahlzietes" for the day from food vendors downtown.

If you're a fan of Pierogi Fest you might enjoy this smaller event too. There will be about 20 food vendors and while the accent will be on German food, there will be plenty of Pierogi too.

Just a quick reminder. Always a fun event!

    July 26th,27th,28
THE WHITING PIEROGI FEST is presented by the Whiting Robertsdale Chamber of Commerce. Drawing almost 200,000 visitors each year, the Festival is the pride of Whiting. It allows us to celebrate our heritage while poking a little fun at ourselves at the same time. Where else can you see grown women dressed up like our grandmothers (bushas, as we say) in housecoats and babushkas? Or the lawnmower brigade strut through town with sandals and socks on like or dads did? You'll also see life-size polish pastries and goodies walking and talking waiting to take a picture with you. Only here at Whiting's Pierogi Fest. Welcome!

    It's a long story.
I'll just state that the 1987 Chevrolet Sprint is sitting in a repair lot in New Buffalo, MI. awaiting a replacement manual transmission. The insurance replacement auto is from Enterprise Rent-A-Car in Michigan City, IN.
While motoring back to Chicago from Michigan City, due to the congestion on the interstate highway, I was on US 12|20 and went through the heart of Whiting.
Pierogi Fest is this weekend. I had to pull this old post out of the graveyard.
I am doing other stuff this weekend (including the Sierra Nevada Beer Camp @ Navy Pier), but should anybody on LTHF go, please let us know how it was.

    Pierogi parade rolls out Friday
The fest will feature more than 75 food vendors.

"We've got about a half dozen new vendors that we've never had before, so we're kind of excited about that," Dabertin said.

He said the new creations are expected to include "anything that can be deep fried."

Another new addition this year is a Polkahontas Polka Luau, scheduled to run from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday at the Sheridan Avenue Polkahontas Stage, just off 119th Street.

"There will be a whole buffet of Hawaiian-Polish food," Dabertin said.

The selections are expected to include pierogi kabobs.

"They'll be entertained by the Squeezettes polka band," Dabertin said.

Seating at the luau is limited to 100 people, and the cost to attend is $25 per person. Reservations are required and can be made by calling the chamber of commerce.

Local BBQ, ice cream joints among fest vendors
WHITING | Of course pierogi are king at Pierogi Fest. Crowds jam 119th Street in the Little City by the Lake, looking for their favorite vendor, looking for the shortest line or looking for something a little out of the ordinary, like alligator-stuffed pierogi.

More than 20 pierogi vendors will be on hand to serve the namesake Polish dumpling at this weekend's festival. But, the fest also treats taste buds looking for something else for their palate.

"We constantly try to update Pierogi Fest," said Tom Dabertin, chairman of the festival and president of the Whiting-Robertsdale Chamber of Commerce. "We often switch our food vendors."

Organizers actually limit the number of vendors for each item so there aren't too many duplicates. That way, there aren't 10 elephant ear booths and multiple places to buy a lemon shake-up.

"We spend a lot of time going through and evaluating our vendors," Dabertin said.

Volunteers walk the fest and photograph vendor booths to make sure they are clean and presentable and presenting the kind of message the fest wants, he said.

"We have hundreds of food vendors that contact us," Dabertin said. "We turn down a lot."

Among the new vendors this year is Ben's Soft Pretzels. Dabertin said he was at a University of Notre Dame football game last year and saw the soft pretzels sold outside the stadium.

"I'd never seen an outside vendor before at Notre Dame," he said.

The pretzel shop known for drawing crowds signed up in January for Pierogi Fest participation, one of the first new vendors for 2015, he said.

Other local vendors include Mexican restaurant El Salto, ice cream shop Valpo Velvet and barbecue joint True BBQ and Whiskey Bar.

Vendors trek from farther away for the fest, too, including a barbecue vendor out of Tennessee, Dabertin said.

"We have about a dozen new vendors," he said.
