It's a fave, but a significant travel time. I don't think I can slot it between meetings, but put me as tentative, my afternoon meeting has a chance of being cancelled....

Oh new date & time? Count two of us in.

No parks. No bicycle groups. Just sit and eat at the Captain! Yeah, I am in.

I will likely be a little late, so I will go along with the flow with whatever the group wants.

Count me in to again sail the high seas with Captain Porky.

I'll be back in town for a couple weeks before heading out again for 2 months, so I'm going to try and make this one. I have been eating a lot of Maine native shrimp--which are very small & delectable--but the jumbos beckon, and I also have a craving for fried blue gill.

90% sure I will be out of town. Had lunch at the captain's yesterday and they were doing brisk business. Lots of bicycle riders.....carbo loading I guess. Fried shrimp were as good as ever, though the roll for the poboy was very disappointing. Excellent lemony greens for a side. Took home some hot links that were good and some tips that were just ok.

    Y'all have fun.

Hmm... As I look at our cast of characters I see we have:
LHS is also known as Mary Ann, hopefully, Katie, an obvious Ginger, Captain Porky as the Skipper, and of course the lovely and talented Dave, as the lovable Gilligan. The rest of us can sort out the roles of the Professor and Mr. and Mrs. Thurston Howell III. I think we have a show!

    Come sing it with me:
Just sit right back and you'll hear a tale
A tale of a fateful trip
That started from this tropic port
    Abord this tiny ship
The mate was a mighty sailin' man
    The skipper brave and sure
Five passengers set sail that day
    For a three hour tour

Great company and lunch today. Interesting conversation. I felt that we were gentle with Tom. Hopefully he’ll join us at future events.

I don’t believe any beans met our lips at lunch. I had a lunch consisting of sausage and catfish.

    HI,

Everyone ordered their own meal with very little sharing.

I ordered a pound of shrimp, garlic potatoes, greens and some cornbread. I ate some then brought the rest home to my parents who devored the shrimp.

I tried some smelt, too, from LHS. It's been a few years since I had any, so that was fun.

    Regards,

Understood if some are curious at the non-sharing bent the group has taken, as opposed to the family-style gatherings in the past. Here's my take on it.

Cap't Porky's ain't cheap, and singularly with seafood it seems that likes/dislikes seem to be magnified. Certainly, this group has a varied & wide palate, but still...

And, not to be discounted, Covid & its remnants continues to play a part in this practice--it's fine to get together & commune, but not to share food--which might be an overreaction, but who knows?

I was perfectly happy ordering my fried blue gill, steak fries, greens & baked beans. (I did offer a small fillet to Joel, who was surprised that he liked it.) My affinity for blue gill goes back to a childhood memory of some long-forgotten family retreat in central Wisconsin, where we caught crappie & blue gill by day and ate the tiny fillets by night. There's a strange, almost-metallic taste of blue gill that to me is more comforting than offputting--I know, weird.

The baked beans, Ron--are almost Big Ed's worthy--that's the gold standard in my book. And I believe Eddie & newcomer Tom had some as well. Very odd that they were served in small, plastic tubs...and COLD. Still pretty darn good.

Not a big fan of the greens, kinda sorry I ordered them--they aren't the South Side version. (Didn't Hecky's have some righteous greens?)

But in the end, the company's the thing. With this motley (in a good way) crew, life diversity, experience & intelligence are the common thread, always leading to great, unique topics that get discussed until they die of their own volition.

Kind of a Cromie Circle in the bizarro world. Enjoyed it a lot, as I always do.

I wasn't so much surprised that I liked it, but that I liked it as much as fried perch. It's been decades since I'd had any bluegill, and they were larger.

The smelts, on the other hand, were a little fishy-tasting.

Jumbo shrimp were, as always, awesome, but I swear not as jumbo as they used to be.
