The November meeting of the Evanston lunch group will be at Ki African Restaurant, 7137 N. Clark, in Chicago (http://orderkiafricanrestaurant.com/index.php). The food in Nigerian, from southwest Nigeria (Yoruba). African food is typically shareable, family style, featuring grilled meat or fish or, even more typically, sauce with staples, rice or fufu (pounded yam; this is NOT sweet potato and is not sweet, but more like mashed potatoes).

I would love to join you, unfortunately I will be returning from visiting my daughter in London that day.

All 2 or 3 restaurants that I have visited in the last 10 years which claim to have fufu, make it from a powdered substance rather than real pounded yam. I'm not clear that you can even get yam in this country, but I would love to try their attempt.

I’ve gotten real yams at Rogers Park Fruit Market and Marketplace on Oakton, but haven’t checked recently to see if they’re still there.

The Yams in Africa are in the Cassava family.

    Hi,

    I plan to attend.

If I later have to cancel, it is not because I did not wish to attend. Sometimes stuff comes up especially on Mondays.

    Regards,

Pounding yams (you can also make fufu with plantains) is very labor intensive. You need to pound the yams in a very large mortar, adding water gradually as you prepare the paste. The women who would make it remarked that it was particularly exhausting compared to other staple starches. Not surprising that restaurants use the instant variety. It is not like mashed potatoes, which I certainly would not make with an instant mix.

I will be there with a turkey hangover.

I stopped by the restaurant today (Friday) and ordered the food; I was told by Kate, the chef/owner, that food can take up to an hour to be ready if it is not ordered in advance, so I am glad I did. Here is the menu:
    Fried plantains (appetizer)
fufu with egusi soup and assorted meats
    jollof rice with assorted meats
    coconut rice with assorted meats
    asaro (yam stew)
    grilled tilapia

    Looking forward to Monday!
