SueF is looking to make a Texas Sheet Cake, I'm inspired by the Netflix Iron Chef to make something between a casserole and a seven layer dip - we'll see how it comes out.

Not looking good for me to make it—returning from a quick trip to Montreal Saturday late afternoon and leaving again for Tampa on Tuesday morning for a week. If the planets align and I can drive out, I’ll probably make a giant tomato platter or something veggie oriented. Fingers crossed!!

Damn! I just picked up all these items this afternoon, so no need to bring any more of them. Maybe they can bring something else?

If they're not cooks, maybe something to eat or drink that they can just buy somewhere? Just a thought. I haven't analyzed the list above to see what we might be missing.

Thinking about this, no need to even analyze it. It should be no more difficult than them bringing something they like. That represents the spirit of the picnic.

I am heartbroken to say that Chouxfly and I will not be there. We live in a house that got flooded last Sunday, and are living in a hotel at the moment, and dealing with cleanup and chaos. I'm so sorry, I was truly so excited to be able to spend time with you lovely folks. I hope you all have a terrific time, and we will cross our fingers for the holiday gathering!

If we can sneak off between the contractors and the cleanup, we might. But I can barely keep myself showered and fed right now... adding another task, even an incredibly fun and delicious one, feels overwhelming. But if we can, we definitely will!

Looks like we will have a couple of friends and another kidlet with us. So I am going to say something vegetarian (perhaps I'll scan the garden). I can figure out more based on the board. Also it is the right time of year and I already have the proper Italian Prunes/Plums so Marian Burros Famous Plum Torte!

    From the article linked above:

"When Marian Burros, a longtime food reporter for The New York Times, first wrote about the plum torte in September 1983, no one expected it to become the most requested recipe, and among the most beloved, in the history of the newspaper.

It certainly appeared without fanfare, nestled in the bottom left-hand corner of the page, accompanying a brief report about the arrival of the Italian plum season. With just eight ingredients and a few short steps, it didn’t seem to have the makings of a hit.

Yet after the fact, the newspaper received so many requests for the recipe that the editors decided to reprint it the following year, and the next, and each subsequent year until they decided it was time to put an end to the madness. In 1989, they ran an updated version (three-quarters of a cup of sugar, rather than a full cup) with a broken-line border, encouraging readers to cut it out, laminate it and save it. Ms. Burros wrote: “This could really be the last time we print the recipe. Really!”

    Numerous letters arrived in protest.

“The appearance of the recipe, like the torte itself, is bittersweet,” a reader wrote. “Summer is leaving, fall is coming. That’s what your annual recipe is all about. Don’t be grumpy about it.”

This torte really is about the only thing I like about the end of summer/start of fall.

    'Tis the Season!

I'm very fond of Burros' torte, although I make a different version, like my grandmother's, for Rosh Hashanah every year. It uses a muerbeteig (very short pastry) crust with halved Italian prune plums on top. Looking forward to your Burros torte!
