I'm craving Mongolian food. If I were to go to Mazalae Mongolian on January 25 (this is a change -- was 18th -- but no one available), say at 11:30, would anyone be interested in joining me? It would be a leisurely lunch, as everything is made to order, but food is good -- if you like dumplings and noodles and big bowls of meaty soup. Weather is supposed to be fairly warm that day, so no battling mountains of snow on the street. Family owned -- nice people.

This is not a great image of the menu, but it is readable: https://www.facebook.com/MazalaeMongolianRestaurant/photos/p.5359830130715972/5359830130715972

**Do check the menu -- if you want dumplings (and particularly the ones that say they take 30 minutes), we'll need to call in our order ahead of time. At least if anyone has to go back to work.

9216 Waukegan Rd , Morton Grove, IL
    (224) 470-5090

And if you're curious, mazalae is a rare species of bear that lives in the Gobi.

And if you want a bit more background on Mongolian food, here's an article I did not too long ago: https://resto.newcity.com/2022/08/03/meat-we-eat-meat-mongolian-cuisine-there-and-here/

    Hi,

If I did not have a conflict, I would be there.

Do they happen to offer fermented mare's milk?

No fermented mare's milk -- but they do serve milk tea, which is simply hot water with milk and salt. Big in Mongolia and in Tibet. I will say that I quite like the milk tea better with cow milk than with yak milk, but mare's milk and reindeer milk aren't so bad. But they are harder to come by here -- and since this is the free drink served with your meal, affordable is important.

And since no one is responding, perhaps I should change the date, so you can come, C2. How about the 16th or 25th?

Also, I did check with them, and we can call in our orders if we want some of the items that take more time.

Make sure that you call them in advance. I have no had good luck the last time that I tried to order from them. They seem closed as often as they are open.

Unfortunately I am out of town on Jan. 25th.

This is really becoming a necessary exercise: calling in advance to reserve and make sure many establishments are really open.

As noted, I did talk to them. They are open on the 18th -- but I'll check about the 25th -- and if people need to hurry, we can order in advance.

But let's change it to the 25th, since no one said "yes" to 18th and we have three of you for the 25th.

Have changed it to the 25th. And sent a note to make sure they knew about the change of date and promised to order in advance (since they actually encouraged this when I contacted them originally).

So who is definitely in. (And sorry you can't make it this time, GAF. Feel free to reach out if you need someone to go with, because I do enjoy their food.)

As for the occasional closures -- as noted, this is a family operation -- it's pretty much mom, dad, and daughter doing the cooking, waiting, and bussing. They do close for about a month each year, to return to Mongolia (grandmother doesn't want grandson growing up without knowing their culture), plus they had to overhaul the place during covid (put in glass walls around kitchen, so you can still watch them working -- and they can still see the front door when it opens -- but protected from germs). Plus they are closed on Tuesdays, rather than the more common Monday. But they are there most of the time. And such nice people.

    Hi,

Ordering in advance for LTH lunches is risky. Orienting them to what you may order can be useful.

I try not to cancel, though it does happen.

I can try calling at 11 am, when we may be a bit more certain -- but since everything is made when it is ordered, it kind of needs to be what we're getting. So perhaps this isn't a good option for LTH.

    Hi,

I am a KISS type: Keep it simple.

We are several weeks away, let's just see who else wishes to attend.

What really needs to be affirmed (and likely already done) is make sure they are open on the date you wish to be there. The biggest issue lately seems to be establishments closing during operating hours, which is not a criticism of anyone but a fact.

Want to discuss what to order, how about a few days before? Three weeks in advance is not really necessary. Unless it involves hauling a lactating horse from Mongolia, which just does not happen that quickly.

    Looking forward to this lunch.

    Regards,
    Cathy2

Did get an affirmative for the 18th but have sent another message about the25th.

As for ordering in advance -- as noted -- I was thinking 11 am -- to give them time to get started on the dumplings -- especially the ones that take longer. I don't mind sitting and sipping milk tea, but some people have to go back to work.

But I'll happily wait and see if anyone else can join us. I'll be perfectly happy if it's just a couple of us. I do eat there alone on occasion, but it's always more fun to share the experience.

They actually might not have to go all the way to Mongolia. I saw bottles of fermented mare's milk at Garden Fresh last year.

Please -- all who can make it -- confirm by tomorrow -- and if possible, let me know what you want to order. Since everything is made by hand and to order, giving them a little heads up is not only appreciated but really advisable.

There is a link to their FB page/website above -- and the menu is under "about" -- but note that the photo on the left is in Cyrillic, so you'll probably want the photo on the right. The site also has lots of photos of the dishes, to help with decisions.

The last item on the menu -- Piroshiki and Mantuun Buuz (buuz--pronounced sort of "boats," is one of Mongolia's three traditional dumpling types) take at least 30 minutes. So if that's what you want, I'll really need to let them know -- unless you're taking it to go at the end of the meal.

BUT DO NOTE -- if you can suddenly come on Wednesday, you're still welcome to join us, but know that the wait for food might be lengthy.

    Thanks.
