Those who go way down memory lane will recall that it was the former site of Doctor Jazz Ice Cream Parlor, part of the first themed restaurant group which pre-dated those of Rich Melman. Known for its peanut butter shakes, silent movies every hour on the hour and the antique amusement games from Riverview Park which included the world’s largest nickelodeon strike machines.

To finish off lunch Greek style and to begin the New Year, Catême will bring a Vasilopita cake. The recipient of the coin will enjoy luck for the year and get his/her own cake to take home.

    HI,

This sounds so festive, I am planning to attend (and hope family does not get in the way).

In with +1. EDIT: See below, we can no longer make it. Sorry!

A couple of notes about Cross-Rhodes...

Jeff Russell opened Cross-Rhodes in 1984. While waiting for my carryout orders to be ready, I used to love watching him man the front counter and phones at the restaurant. He could keep up with the rapid fire, order after order coming in on the phones, having the cooks make the food, and taking payments for carryouts and dine-ins. He was amazing! Unfortunately, he passed away in 2012, and the restaurant is now owned and run by his daughter Maria.

I was rather surprised to learn that the Evanston Lunch Group™ has never previously had lunch at Cross-Rhodes, despite its long history and solid reputation. (I assume we've never been there as a group, given that there's no record of it in the ELG™ history topic.)

Yes, I am in. Perhaps we never went to Cross-Rhodes.

Silly me, it was just pointed out in PM that the pictures are from Cross Rhodes website. No wonder they are so good.

Grew up eating there. The half chicken with fries was my favorite.

    I'll be there.

Just checking the memory banks -- I first ate at Cross-Rhodes when we moved to Evanston in 1986; we were only a short walk away and dined there many times. I enjoyed every meal.

For a long time, my favorite was the chicken dinner. In recent years I've been inclining toward the gyros. My wife likes the mousaka. My late mother was a fan of the burgers.

You can't go wrong at Cross Rhodes.

I have very fond memories of sitting with my showrunner partner Sal, who lived around the corner from Cross-Rhodes. We'd meet there when we'd have to construct or tweak a newest version of our musical Summer Of Love 1967 revue. That place was always Good-Luck Charlie to us.

Sitting at a back table so we wouldn't be bothered, we'd order a bottle of Australian Malbec or Spanish Rioja, a couple of Greek salads (great feta if memory serves), then their damn-near-perfect skirt steak with cottage fries that would soak in the steak juices, piping hot pita on the side. And their tzatziki was stellar.

We never rushed. Over the course of 2-3 hours, even to the point that they were closing up around us--Sal knew the owners well so that never bothered us--we ate and drank and debated and laughed and imagined the song order for the sets, imagining in our minds the song flow and how it would work out when performed. Before long, there were wine and steak juice stains all over our paperwork, amid much laughter and a simply wonderful food buzz.

I'll be recovering from hip surgery so I won't make it this time, but this has reminded me to hit up Cross-Rhodes sooner rather than later. Salut, all!
