Unless you are a VIP with a retailer, you have no chance. No bottles will hit a shelf unless they are marked up to crazy prices.

Yeah no chance of picking up bottles anywhere. I've found 1 and 2oz pours at "reasonable" prices and even that is a difficult task.

I consider myself lucky getting my mitts on a bottle of btac Stagg his year. In terms of Pappy, zero chance unless you're willing to pay through the nose.

I know it's not a place to buy a full bottle, but has anybody been to Mordecai across from Wrigley Field? They have 22 bottles of Pappy on their menu including 6 bottles of the 15 year from 2007, 2009, 2011, 2013, 2014, and 2015. They also have 4 bottles from various years of the 23 year.

Longman and Eagle in Logan Square also has a 15, 20, and 23 year.

Last time I was there, the selection was impressive, but the prices were absolutely out of control. Weller 12 was something like $35 for a pour...don't quote me but it was something so astoundingly high that I didn't even consider buying any.

Beer Temple tends to have a smaller but still pretty good selection - almost always Weller 12 and Weller Antique, as well as BTAC bottles, sometimes some Pappy, sometimes some other heavily allocated stuff, and all at super reasonable prices...or at least what can be considered reasonable by today's standards. Like Weller 12 for $10. Pappy 15 for $15...that sort of pricing. But because they have so little in the way of liquor, they don't always have a great selection of stuff...luck of the draw when you walk in!

Mordecai is offensive in terms of pricing. There are some gems around though. Longman isnt terrible, Big Star on Damen usually has a pretty great selection and decent prices.

I went into Fountainhead Friday evening and picked up this flyer. I think it will be of interest to people in this rubric.
    The BenRiach presents...
To peat, or not to peat

    An interactive tasting with
    global ambassador Stewart Buchanan.
    Tuesday, 4 February 2020, 7:00 pm: $40.00

    The illustration shows BenRiach expressions 10 (2), 17, & 20.
I guess you have to call or visit Fountainhead to get a ticket. I could not find a corresponding World-Wide Web page.

Admittedly I am a cheap date when it comes to bourbon. I have nice pours for company but I typically drink bourbon as highballs or whisky sours with near- bottom shelf selections myself. I spend extra for decent ginger ale and ginger beer. I was at my local Jewel and I saw on the clearance rack they were selling regular Four Roses 750 ml for $4.99. I bought the last 3 bottles. Mistake or score?

Four roses is a damn good bourbon to use with mixers. For 4.99, I'd buy every single one too

Agreed. A very nice purchase. I think it generally runs around $20/bottle.

    Test.
    Hello, whisk(e)y drinkers.
I'm currently sitting at the bar at The Next Whiskey Bar in Lisle, IL.
I did not find any BenRiach on its menu. :?
    Its feature flight today is
    • Johnny Walker Black
    • Glenlivet 12 yr
    • Glenlivet 14 yr
There are five pages of various whiskeys listed. I believe I shall select some of the metropolitan distilleries' whiskies. What other drams that you can think of should I select? {1½ oz. pours} :)
Don't select the forum rubric title: It's $100.

    Old news!!!
What I have learned from Pappy’s and bourbon in general is that when Pappy’s hit, no one else was marketing aged Bourbon at the Pappy level.
From tastings it became clear that age is what supplies the smoothness, not 4 years, not 8 years but 15 on up. Not many distilleries had the aged stocks that were acquired when the distillery was sold. That, luck and some marketing genius supplied the rest.
The world is still on the boom side of the boom, bust curve for bourbon.
Every tom, Dick and Harry with a few bucks has gotten into the market.
Most just purchase stocks and put fancy labels and marketing on the bottle.
Bourbon on the Pappy level takes time.
My wife took me to a Bourbon Tasting at a restaurant in Wisconsin, a friend owns.
The Bourbon was a Wisconsin product.
The pours were enough to get one easily jailed if you consumed all of it.
I asked if I could purchase a barrel and have the distillery keep it for me for 20 years.
The owners looked at me like i was crazy. In 10 years or less they will be gone from the market.
What I have learned is when the collectors enter a market, the best thing to do is get out.

Hi- I got a notice that Jewel posted something on their Facebook page about some rare whiskey that they are going to make available, but it is going to be distributed through a lottery. Pappy Van Winkle was one of the whiskeys. I am not a lover of whiskey, and so I forget what the other ones are. I was going to post a link to their Facebook page, but Facebook is acting up right now. I just got the notification about it this morning. I just found out that if you win the lottery, you get to purchase one bottle of whiskey. There are four different whiskeys they have available. Hope this helps, Nancy

Chef Edward Lee as been selling off whiskey from his restaurant Whiskey Dry on his Instagram page. There was a post on 11/26 that said:

Make your turkey taste better with these rare and special whiskeys. These are our latest offerings for retail sale. These are all 1 bottle lots. Thank you for supporting @whiskeydry during these challenging times.

    -Four Roses 2020 Barrel Strength
    -Old Fitzgerald 14yr Bottled-In-Bond
    -Pappy Van Winkle 12yr
    -Redemption 10yr Bourbon
    -Kavalan EX-Bourbon Cask
    -Jefferson’s Chef Collaboration

For pricing and details, please call us at 502-749-7933 or email mara@whiskeydryrestaurant.com

He's done two other earlier posts with whiskeys for sale so would probably be worth following him or the restaurant (he posts the info on both) to see what else he might offer up for sale. @chefedwardlee and @whiskeydry

If you're going to buy whiskey -- or anything else, for that matter -- on the secondary market, unless you know the seller well, best to go through a credible and vetted auction house. The commission you pay will be well worth it. Consider it an insurance expense against fraud.

The Oregon stuff gets a mention in this piece, which sums up a bunch of recent events . . .

As Bourbon Booms, Thirst for Rare Brands Breeds Skullduggery

Not a ton of new information there -- and some of what is there isn't entirely accurate -- but it does show the extent to which bourbon has become mainstream.
