Try the pork with green sauce guisado. The other that I liked is completely escaping me right now - memory issues due to sleep apnea, bleargh

And yes, we did our last major shopping run at that Tony's there - it was actually lunch at El Milagro and shopping at Tony's afterward this past Saturday. We weren't even halfway through when my wife said, "We're never going back to Jewel again." I'd already decided the same thing after a quick scouting run a few days earlier. Assuming it isn't snowing heavily the next time I think we'll probably do some of the produce at that Familia Foods on the other side of Harlem though, and the rest of the shopping at Tony's.

Many thanks to you and Matt for the recommendation to shop there!

    Hi Gang

I have a question about El Millagro on Blue Island. Do they sell Tamales in the carryout store?

Or do you get those from the restaurant?

    Thanks

from what I recall, there is a little store that mostly sells tortilla type products, that's not the spot. The cafeteria style restaurant is where you wanna be. They sell out, so try to go as early as you can.

Tamales...I've been trying to get a decent one out in my area (DeKalb, Sycamore). Everytime I get them I am dismayed at how little meat is in them. Tell me, oh great ones, am I expecting too much to see a decent amount of meat in a tamale? Last time I got "homemade" tamales I cut 6 of them in half and carved out the filling. There wasn't even a 1/2 cup of meat there. Maybe I'm expecting too much!

What are the chances any of the city's great tamales can be found anywhere north of Fullerton? I'm currently eating some homemade ones from a colleague and now know that I need to get a more readily available source than his family and the family of one of my childhood friends... I'm in Andersonville but would be willing to travel a bit.

Well, there's Tamales los Mejores de Guerrero, up in Rogers Park. I've always had good luck with them.

The last time i went, i ordered a couple of dozen to take home - but they started heating my tamales up in the microwave. The microwave was right behind the counter, so i was able to nip that in the bud. I suppose adding in a "to go" might have helped when i ordered.

    Enjoy,

Second Tamales los Mejores de Guerrero but on weekends go early, they run out fast. We've never been able to get the rajas before they run out. Lately we've been going to Carnitas Don Rafa on south Kedzie. $7.95 a dozen for big meaty tasty tamales. Call ahead and they'll hold your order.

You might try the tamales at Harvestime (a grocery store on Lawrence). I don't know if they make their own or whom they buy from; also don't know how they compare to the "best of" places listed in this thread. But their tamales are pretty good, at least to my taste. (Edgewater Produce on Clark is the same company - they may have them also. Also try the taquerias in Cermak Produce.)

Can you share the pricing at Harvest Time? I am looking to purchase 10 - 15 dozen for an event at our school on Friday.
