The sign in Rapa Nui's window says Riviera Maya, Mexican Food, Coming Soon. Definitely not Chilean and no indication whether it really will be Mayan or just some more generic Mexican. Drover's post in this thread was submitted while I was noting the closing in the main Rapa Nui thread.

Caffe de Luca on Damen has closed/been sold to make way for a steakhouse called Grass Fed. Walked by there about 20 minutes ago and it was in the process of being dismantled.

Teriyaki and Garlic Parmesan. Fairly big with enough topping. Nice crunch to the skin.

Not earth shattering news but better than Wing Stop near Harlem and North. :)

I stand corrected. There was construction equipment blocking my view of the sign when I drove by.

Yeah, I'm sticking with that excuse.

    C. Manny's could use the competition. They used to be one of our go-to places for gringo Mexican but they've really been sliding lately.

I am sorry to see the only Chilean restaurant in Chicago close, my source for empanadas and pebre in bulk. I started making pebre at home a while ago; guess I'll have to work on my dough skills and start making empanadas at home too. Tonight, though, perhaps I'll comfort myself over the closing of Rapa Nui with a pastel de choclo.

According to the Mount Prospect Journal, Bogie's Ale House in Mount Prospect (Kensington near Rand, formerly The Loft) is up for foreclosure auction on Friday. This is a sad day.

Note: I just called, and they're still open for business. Hopefully a rescue is being thought of.

    According to TribLocal today:

"The group that oversees Evanston’s downtown area is hoping to entice the Viennese coffee house company Julius Meinl to come to town by launching a Facebook page to show the company how much it’s wanted. Downtown Evanston, the organization that markets and manages the downtown business district, encourages residents to 'like' the Facebook page, entitled “Bring Julius Meinl to Downtown Evanston.”  In turn, it hopes the company will be encouraged to open its fourth Chicago-area location at 1700 Maple Ave., the former home of Borders bookstore. The company’s coffee, food, and live entertainment would be an 'excellent addition' to a downtown area that is currently exploring the creation of an arts and entertainment district," according to the group....

Just yesterday, I had my memory refreshed as to how good Julius Meinl coffee is, as I enjoyed a cup at an Evanston Lunch Group gathering at Creperie Saint Germain. Of course, there are already a lot of coffeehouses in Evanston, but I wouldn't object to one more if it was Julius Meinl.

Big Ed’s BBQ in North Chicago will be closing this Saturday. Ed is closing his North Chicago location so he can focus on his other location in Waukegan. He said he will be adding ribs to the Waukegan menu as well as a few other items (no tips) from the North Chicago BBQ.

I just saw that today, and I could swear Aegean Isles was there not two weeks ago. Must have been a Meigs-style closing. That smoker has me pretty excited.

They wasted no time getting their sign and awning up -- both of which require a city permit, suggesting either they're experienced restauranteurs who know their way through the bureaucracy or they're novices who don't know they need a permit. Given the pace at which the place looks to be getting transformed, we'll have a chance to find out either way soon.

There was some movement, windows open -- people inside, today at Sweet Pea, formerly Paddy O'Spaine's, 2434 W.Montrose. O'Spaine's has been closed at least 6 months, but the Sweet Pea sign went up almost as soon as O'Spaine's closed. I was starting to wonder if they were ever going to open.

This is way early, but a Whole Foods has been approved to clutter up I mean open in downtown Park Ridge at about 225 W. Touhy, where one of those nifty old red-brick buildings with columns currently stands. It's fenced off and looks to be about two days from collapse. Fortunately I have a Whole Foods and Trader Joe's not far from work so I don't have to shop in this area.

Palermo Bakery @ 3317 N Harlem Ave is 'closed for vacation', although a sign on the inside states that they're closed because of an illness in the family. When I asked the young woman behind the counter when they might be re-opening, she said that she wasn't sure, the illness was a serious one.

So, good thoughts and white light to the family than runs this bakery. We could debate which Italian/Sicilian bakery is the best in Chicago, but I feel I'm on pretty firm ground stating it's the best one on the NW side. Certainly my favorite.

Wish I'd known a week sooner, I'd have stocked up on their pizza bread. Totally my favorite. By the time I stopped by, it was the day before closing and they weren't selling bread or pizza, only pastries.
