Hi - I was curious if anyone is aware of any special Hanukkah menus or menu items at any local restaurants beginning this weekend? I personally would be interested in suggestions in the city or western suburbs --- but I welcome any suggestions throughout Chicagoland, in case others are looking for something similar in their own neck of the woods. Thanks.

Hanukah is not such a big deal holiday -- I don't think I've ever seen a Hanukah menu, and I've lived most of my life in relatively high population Jewish areas. There is no special Hanukah dinner or foods beyond latkes and sufganiyot (jelly donuts), which some restaurants might add to their menus. Most Jews tend to celebrate at home, or they may carry out from one of the many Jewish/kosher caterers or stores. Suffice to say, I doubt there is much demand for a Hanukah menu!

I'd seek out those places that already feature deli style food (Eleven City Diner, Manny's). I'm not familiar with the western burbs to be able to offer suggestions. Up on the North Shore, Max and Benny's (Northbrook), Max's (Highland Park), or possibly L.Woods (Lincolnwood) might be options.

There is only one true kosher restaurant downtown, MetroKlub, and it is just open for lunch M-Th. You could call to see if they are doing anything for Hanukah.

    Hi,

Some miscellaneous Hannukah mentions on LTHforums. There are likely more since Hannukah has several spellings.

There are Mexican style latkes at Casa de Isaac in Highland Park.

I might note that this link was featured on Manny's Deli's Facebook page:

They definitely offering latkes on their catering menu, and they also have a recipe and mix for those who are latke DIY-ers.

Kaufman's always has latkes for sale, and during Chanukah they sell sufganiyot (jelly donuts). Other than those items and probably a fair amount of Chanukah chazzerai (gelt, decorations, etc.), I don't think they have special Chanukah menus. They do the usual deli trays, fish trays, etc., and all other prepared food is available frozen.

Somehow I thought the OP was asking for places with a sit-down Chanukah dinner, which Kaufman's would definitely not do.

As does Manny's, as an FYI to the poster above. Traditional Jewish delis always feature a "greatest hits" selection of holiday favorites year-round, like matza brei, matza ball soup and latkes.

As reported on Eater Chicago: "WEST LOOP— Even though Hanukkah is ending this Sunday, City Winery will be hosting klezmer brunches through the end of the month. Enjoy Jewish food and different klezmer ensembles. $30 gets you in."
