Really liked Hienie's, that mustardy hot sauce they offer is unique to my tastebuds, i enjoyed it on both the shrimp and chicken wings.

forgot my camera in the truck for the food, but had to get a pic of signage:

I had the opportunity to visit Hienie’s McCarthy’s Orland Park location today for a late lunch. I’ve avoided visiting the location before because it is located at a logistically challenging intersection nestled next to railroad tracks. A neighbor clued me in that there is a small lot adjacent to the location on the east end of the property.

I ordered a half-pound ($8.00) of their fried shrimp, and, noted after I ordered that there are two offerings—shrimp and jumbo shrimp. If I had a preference, I would have ordered the jumbo shrimp ($9.00/ ½ LB), but, as I contemplated changing my order, my number was called and that decision would have to wait until a later date.

I arrived home a few minutes later to find eight plump breaded shrimp with tails removed along with a small container of standard cocktail sauce. The shrimp were de-tailed with what I would consider a fairly medium density breading. Three of the shrimp could have easily passed for jumbo, and, all were perfectly cooked. The shrimp were sweet and fresh.

I have been a fan of Frank’s Chicago Shrimp House locations for many years, and, visit their Burbank location whenever I’m in the area. I grew up visiting Frank’s Archer location on a weekly basis and miss picking up a pound of jumbos and walking next door to “The Cage” for a few cold ones while enjoying my shrimp.

I’ll definitely visit Hienie’s McCarthy’s Orland Park location again and try some of their jumbo shrimp and chicken.

Been wanting to try this spot, it is just down 143rd Street from a construction project we are doing. Just havent made it in yet.

Anyone know the relation, if there is any, between the Hienie's on 104th & Torrence & this spot in Orland? Cartoon mascot looks similar. Hoping they have that hot sauce in Orland...

Jim: According to the "About Us" tab on Hienie's McCarthy's website, the Orland location was opened in 1978 by the founding father's son for his children to operate. The original location was opened in 1947 in Hammond, IN as a fresh fish store. I might have to head over tonight and pick up a pound of jumbo's! Enjoy, Tom

made the trip down to Orland to check out Hienies MCCarthys for lunch yesterday, friendly folks, pretty good lunch all around.:

    Image

1/2 lb. Jumbo shrimp @ $9.00 was nice.:

    Image

    wings were ok:

    Image

$14 for the shrimp, the 3 wing dinner(which came with choice of potato), and a can of Coke. Shrimp were solid and large, and I enjoyed their unique mustardy hot sauce which they sell by the gallon.

Added Bonus of this trip was I spotted 2 Italian Beef spots(Pops, Mr Beef) on 143rd I didnt know about as I headed east.

I don't know if it's convenient for you but I especially recommend the Palos Heights Pop's. It's the original and it's where Pop himself (Frank) hangs out. I haven't been to the Orland Park one but of the handful I've visited, the Palos Pop's is tops (they're all good though). One of my favorite two or three beefs.

I've been to their locations in Dyer,In and Homewood and enjoyed their sandwiches every time. Based on what people have reported their product seems to be pretty consistent at every location.

My comments may belong in a thread about Italian Beef, but relevant to the above posts:

I live within minutes of the Pop’s Orland Park location on 143rd Street and have never understood the love for this place. I used to frequent their Chicago location at 103rd and Kedzie and always enjoyed their food. I’ve always found the food at the Orland Park location to be extra-greasy (in a bad way). I also cannot forgive their use of “misfit” fries. These fries are the rejects that don’t make the grade for any establishment that has quality standards. However, if you like a large order of reject fries, Pop’s Orland Park location is the place for you. Not to pile on, but I just find the place to be sub-standard with greasy rolls and buns and pre-cooked, re-heated burgers. Hot dogs are uninspired and loaded to the point that the buns become a sloppy integrated mess with the dog. Maybe I just need to order a beef sandwich and stay away from their other offerings.

I would highly recommend a visit to the Mr. Beef location in Homer Glen on 143rd Street. The owner is related to the original Mr. Beef family in Chicago on Orleans Avenue. The beef is cooked on site—you can see the commercial ovens and slicer from the order counter. The owner is on site every day and they deliver a quality product for the money.

Just my $.02 on the beef sandwich market in the SW burbs. Whatever scratches your itch! Enjoy, Tom

With fried shrimp currently being discussed in another thread and the mention of Haire's with it I should share this. I know theres been a reference or two upthread. Here's some photographic documents of it.

Located in Chatham across the street from Simeon Career (in basketball) Academy, fried shrimp is all they do here. It comes in one size with two portion options offered. The shrimp are on the smaller side with a really light breading and some nice kicked up hot sauce on the side. Best in the City like so many that played hoops across the street? Tough to choose just one but I'm a fan.

Harbour Point has some delicious fresh shrimp, I had the "Colossal" fried shrimp the last time I went, superb.

Their Monkfish was talked about here - but I go to Harbour Point for the Fried OR Blackened Shrimp - also some great homemade potato and seafood salads, good beans and rice & dirty rice. Avoid the pasta.....

Still hungry after a lackluster snack at Smalls Smoke Shack(bibimbap & spares), I jetted down to Orland and Hienes McCarthys for a snack for the ride home. 1/4 lb. Perch and 1/4 shrimp dinner $6.99. right on. Devoured all in the parking lot with plenty of Hienies hot sauce.

That's the spot. The one on Illinois was a different joint.
For a couple years in the early eighties, my Thursday lunch was a half pound of fish and a six inch turkey sub. Great brad which seems to havedisappeared in this age, and the sauce was a basic cocktail with a lot of horseradish.

Yes he did wear his paper hat. The two owners were brother and sister. I think he was a friend but worked there for as long as I can remember. The sauce was not sweet and it was thin. It was unique and went very well with the fish chips and shrimp.

Been chowing quite a bit of fried shrimp lately. Saw I was going to be in Cicero, so Captain B's Shrimp House was on the list.

Carrryout spot on Roosevelt road, with another location in Bellwood.

Went with a 3/4 LB jumbo shrimp, and some hot sauce. Was happy to see an orange Heinies type hot sauce in the bag. Shrimps were really good, might even be in my top 5.

Johnson's Door County Fish in Lombard does some really good shrimp. Wednesday they are on special: the plate for $5.95 or the dinner for $7.95. Been trying to get in once a week the past few months.

Like their NW Indiana location they offer a lightly breaded shrimp, here is a 1/2# lightly breaded:
