    Montrose BBQ 2014 #2 - Sunday June 8th, 2014 - SKEWERS!
Everything must be cooked and/or served on sticks! I'll bring a middle eastern style skewer grill so you can just bring your grilling foods and skewer them on the spot. This should be a fun one!

Last time a couple people got lost trying to find the spot. It is just north of montrose beach, but that doesn't mean it's on montrose. It is actually just a little north of Lawrence Ave. Please look at the map and answers to other questions here:
    FAQ AND SCHEDULE.

RSVP below, and please let me know what you plan to bring. You can also RSVP, invite friends, and join the conversation over at the Facebook Invite page

For the details, like where, when, what to bring, etc, please see:
    FAQ AND SCHEDULE.

I plan to bring the hearts of as many animals as I can locate. On sticks of course. I'm evil like that.

I hope someone will do something along the lines of "stab the jerk"!! Alas, it will not be me, since I need to keep things very simple given that I don't know when I'll be able to get there--we have a tournament in Bourbonnais that weekend. Thinking of skewers of shishitos and baby octopus (separate skewers). The octopus will kind of look like little puppets :)

For those of us following LTH instead of Facebook, So far we have:

    Hearts of various animals,
Fruit skewers, some fresh, some grillable,
    Mishkaki (east African beef skewers)
    Shishito Peppers
    Baby octopus
    Desert or Shitake yakitori
    Spicy Lamb with cumin
Pork to be served over Pilaf

So far the menu is looking good! No drinks yet, maybe I'll try to bring some homebrew.

I will bring a skewer grill that comes with metal skewers, and there will be plenty of space on that. If you wish to use it, you'll have to skewer your items there using the metal ones. If you use wood, they would burn up and the food would fall directly on the coals. Sounds like there may be one or two small grills (boudreaulicious and panther in the den), so if you skewer ahead of time on wood skewers, sounds like you'll still have space.

Thinking of maybe...seekh kebab with garlic naan and mint chutney.

Lamb, ideally, of course. Perhaps some green mango slaw to provide a sharp spicy tartness to brighten things up, or may be a purple cabbage slaw for crunchy crispness?

Last minute inspiration always win out. :)

I will manage to bring something, and can't wait for my 1st picnic of the season!

Thanks, Matt and Teresa, for organizing.

I'm thinking of bringing my mom, if the weather is nice. She's in a wheelchair so I might need some assistance getting her onto/across the grassy area.

My contribution will be bacon-wrapped something (shrimp? dates?).

Is anyone opposed to pushing the start time for this one to noon or 1pm instead of 11am. The truth is not many people show up at 11 anyhow, and I'm going have a late night the night before. Also, skewers are fast and easy, so I don't see any problem with starting later. Thoughts?

Actually that works better for me. I'm doing bacon wrapped scallops and I'll bring something to drink, maybe margaritas now that lime prices are dropping.

Will definitely be there and 1pm or whenever is fine. Picked up some fresh wasabi at Mitsuwa today so thinking skirt steak or lamb skewers and I'll serve them with some kind of Japanese-esque wasabi salsa.

Leek, Someone will gladly help, and there is a sidewalk that goes pretty much right up to where we are located, as you see here: https://www.google.com/maps/@41.9710894 ... a=!3m1!1e3

Everyone's contributions sound great! I'm looking forward to the fresh wasabi, and some margaritas!

I've been hunting/foraging in a remote extension of Oak Park's Austin Gardens--"TJ's Grove"--and gathered some dessert items to bring.

    Looking forward to joining you.

Sorry we had to leave early, but what a lovely (if cool and breezy) day! Everything we ate was so so so good, I think my favorites were Teresa's chicken Boti and Evelyn's grilled fruit, but it was all wonderful.

And I was sad to have missed Jen's Egg salad on a stick.

Next time I really do have to try harder to convince mom to give it a go. With that sidewalk right there, there's no way we wouldn't have made it, even if she only were able to stay for an hour.

    Still stuffed.

Boudreaulicious' egg salad on a stick & Korean Dip

    Teresa's Chicken Boti
    Alex's skewers-- was that lamb?
    Mbh's "so a scallop, a stick, & bacon walk into a bar"
    Evelyn's grilled fruit
Mike's Radish & butter sandwiches on a stick
    BR's steak on a stick

And everything else we managed to get down was just delicious.

The sunshine, generosity, laughter, and community make breaking bread with you folks a delight as usual.

Enjoyed a great day by the lake yesterday. Food and company were terrific - I'm pretty sure I ate enough for 2 days. One great thing about these picnics is how many ideas everyone else's contributions give you for more things to cook at home - so much creativity.

My only regret: money spent on wasabi that really lacked punch and flavor, even when grated last minute. I doubt it was the lesser Oregon wasabi (which actually would have been better in this case), but I suspect there was a long time between shipment from Japan and purchase and I know it's a highly volatile product. But hey, nothing ventured, nothing gained.

This was one of my favorite MBSPBBQs, lots of killer food and a great variety of styles/cuisines.

And yes, my skewers were lamb. Loose recipe is shoulder cut into 3/4-1" pieces, marinaded over night in a coarse paste consisting of grated garlic/ginger, toasted ground szechuan peppercorns, red chilli flakes, copious amounts of toasted ground cumin, and just enough shaoxing wine and oil to form a paste. Just before leaving i dusted the skewers with a second coating of cumin with more of a coarse grind.
