Finally made it over to Wildwood Tavern last night to see how Mark Freedman was faring with his new endeavor, new sign notwithstanding.
By all accounts, pretty darned good. The room is high-ceilinged, spacious (there's a back room too, also a nicely-sized bar area) and thank goodness the noise level was down, although this was at 6PM, maybe before the screaming people arrive. Most tables were full, happy, with a definite good vibe.
Ordered the 'Supper Club Starter Platter', a Myron & Phil old-timey standby. For nine bucks it was a very generous portion of chopped liver with requisite egg & chopped onion. Matzo, quartered green tomatoes & pickles (lengthwise quarters, not thick crosscut slices like M&P) were also there, although there was no roasted red pepper. (Heresy!

) They also do a smaller version for $5, which may have sufficed, but we snarfed up the whole larger portion.
My dinner partners ordered the brisket sandwich, Shrimp de Jonghe (damn close to M&P's version) and fried shrimp, and all were deemed very good. For myself, I had to order the 'Original Myron & Phil's Skirt Steak'. And even at twenty-eight bucks--the most expensive thing on the menu--I was not disappointed in the least. Mark thinks this version is even better than at M&P, and I may very well agree. Almost fork-tender in a great au jus with those burnt onions, it was over a foot long and had to be folded over itself to fit on the plate. With a fair green salad made
much better by their signature Green Goddess dressing and tasty mashed potatoes, I took half of it home for steak & eggs this morning. I believe I'd make a return trip just for that skirt steak.
For those who visited in Wildwood Tavern's early days and might not have had the best experience, you should probably return now. It's an operation with staying power that's just hitting its Freedman stride.
