I'm surprised no one has posted about eating at City Mouse since my above post here. Five of us ate dinner there this past Sunday, and it was thoroughly outstanding in every way. It may be the best restaurant in Chicago that nobody's talking about (as this topic seems to confirm).
City Mouse is located in the quirky new Ace Hotel across the street from the Google building in the West Loop. The hotel lobby is thoroughly modern with minimal signage, and across from the elevators you'll find an old-fashioned photo-taking booth machine. Quirky, indeed. The restaurant is contemporary as well. There is some outdoor seating for warmer seasons, and a lovely long, narrow room for private parties on the other side of a glass partition from the main dining room. The restaurant was only about half full most of the time we were there, but the staff told us it was because Sunday is their slowest night of the week. It was not particularly noisy, but that may or may not be true on a busier night of the week. I took this photo when we arrived around 6:15, so it was more empty then than later on.

The menu consists mostly of sharable smaller plates. My reaction was very similar to its sister restaurant Giant, where we ate recently. Like Giant, I didn't get very excited or compelled by reading their menu, but when each dish arrived, it was amazingly delicious, full of big,
BOLD flavors, and a wonderful balance of ingredients and colors and textures. Remarkably, it was all hits, not a single miss. Here's what we had, in the order we were served:
CORNBREAD - parmesan butter (sorry, the flash blurred out the dollop of parmesan butter on the side)

COUNTRY MOUSE - cheddar, caramel, caviar shooter (one person requested his with no caviar, as depicted)

MUTSU APPLES AND FARRO - roasted pears, ginger, kohlrabi, pecorino

CHINESE BROCCOLI - chick pea and sunflower seed

FRIED ARTICHOKES - pork ragu, italian breadcrumbs, taleggio

ROTI MOPHO - sesame eggplant, dates, feta

TAGLIATELLE - olive oil fried tomatoes, gulf shrimp, chili butter

GOAT CHEESE MALFATTI - braised lamb, roasted carrots, cippolini

LASAGNA - grana padano

SEA SCALLOPS - king crab, green curry, butternut squash, herbs

FREE RANGE SMOKED CHICKEN - cashew rice and aioli

APPLE PIE - apple caramel, brown sugar almonds, apple ice cream

FUNNEL CAKE - honey peanut butter, klug farm grape jam and ice cream

WHIPPED CHEESECAKE - blueberries, almond, coconut, shiso

Service was excellent too - friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful.
We shared all our dishes, and started to feel full before our last two big savory dishes (scallops and chicken), which we could have easily skipped. Even so, City Mouse was surprisingly affordable. The wine list had over a dozen wines available by the glass, all in the $9-13 range. With too many dishes ordered, and two full bottles of wine along with several other beverages, the check was $73/pp including tax before tip. With more judicious food ordering and less alcohol, it would be easy to dine in the $50-60/pp range for dinner. (City Mouse is also open for breakfast/brunch and lunch.)
Bottom line, City Mouse is absolutely terrific. We can't wait to go back!
