Anyone looking to do a Labor Day burgers and hot dog grilling summer swan song would do well to pick up "Natural Casing Hot Franks" under the Joe Caputo & Sons store label. Some day they'll refer to Cadillacs as the "Caputo Natural Casing Hot Dog" of cars. No they won't, but boy, what a day that would be.

    At a Caputo's near you.

Yeah, well, thanks! Since I'm in KC for the semester, you ain't no help! besides to make my mouth water.

BUT, so as to return the favor: I just bought *5 lbs* of fresh roasted Hatch greens at my nearby Latino superstore, for $5 gringo. Yee-hah!

Looking forward to trying the Caputo's when I get up that way next month. Wonder where the nearest Caputo's is to Whitewater??

Sooo, you like wine and are looking for something good to read? Maybe *this* will do the trick! :)

If you're in Rogers Park and haven't tried Romanian Kosher dogs then you're missing out. On Clark and Touhy.

Romanian Kosher offers a tasty dog, all beef, balanced spicing, subtle garlic, but it is a skinless hot dog, not natural casing.

I agree with Romanian Kosher Suasage - excellent hot dogs - especially the garlic dogs - but they are not natural casing but don't hold that against them - the issue is with the ablity to obtain kosher natural casings.

BTW while you are there also pick up a salami for another taste treat

Kosher is not an issue for me so I do, in fact, hold that against them.

Agree on Romanian's salami, one of my favorites, especially the drier versions.

Anywhere near Oak Park to get specifically Vienna natural-casing dogs?

    I checked the online store:
Vienna Natural Casing Hot Dog Pack
The same premium beef dogs Chicagoans have loved for more than 100 years, with extra snap to the bite, thanks to our Sheep natural casings. The way sausages used to be!

    Includes:

Price includes 2 day shipping Price: $89.99

    $3 per dog?! Wow.

The only place I have found them is at the factory store (not to be confused with the online store which is very expensive) at 2501 N Damen. They are sold in bulk by the lb and come in a couple of different sizes.ex.8-1 10-1

They'll be about $4-5/lb at the factory store, I believe. You should also be able to buy 5lb boxes if you want the 8-1 size.

Any number of Polish/Eastern European grocery stores carry natural casing hot dogs, just saw some today at KD Market on Elmhurst Rd in Mount Prospect
I did absolutely nothing and it was everything I thought it could be.

If you want some real good ones, go to www.vollwerth.com and order a package of bulk ones. This is a Yooper company over 100 years old based in Hancock, Michigan. I grew up with them, but still hard to beat. In Milwaukee, Karl's Country Market on Pilgrim and Silver Spring makes very good ones.

Have not tried Vollwerth but if you are inclined to order online, or take a short road trip to Sheboygan, Miesfeld's natural casing hot dogs are tops in my book. Distinct natural casing snap with accompanying spurt of juicy goodness, noticeable spice and a solid hit of garlic. I've ordered bulk brats and dogs from Miesfeld's in the past and was pleased with the service and product. I should also mention the ever accurate Steve Z and Smoque's Barry Sorkin agree.

If one visits Sheyboygan they will be well served by reading Antonious's posts from 2009. The Creatures that ate Sheboygan...

Before I did a blind tasting, I would swear that Usinger’s veal wieners (wiener is Usingers’ for natural casing) were my favorite.
But Vienna Natural casing beat out Usinger’s veal and Usingers’ beef Weiner's hands down for three tasters’s.
Probably the exposure to years of Bull’s games at the old Chicago Stadium and before that to Hot Dog Carts!
BTW, on my last trip last summer to the Vienna Factory Store, they told me that they would eventually close that location and move to the new factory location.-Richard

    Bud,
We moved the production from Damen & Fullerton to Pershing & Morgan in December of 2015. The north side building still houses the factory store, customer service, sales, marketing, and Hot Dog University. A new factory store was opened across the street from the south side plant.

That store serves up fantastic dogs and maxwell polishes as well. They serve corned beef and pastrami sandwiches as well. But, those just are not as good as Manny's!

Come on Gary, is that a trick question?

I haven't bought a case of hot dogs from there in probably over 10 years but everytime someone mentions the Factory Store I get ideas. One day I'll get a standalone freezer and be able to have more on hand (like I need more of them standing by at all times). Like I said I need to stock my freezer with vegetables and chicken...
