In case you're blocked by the paywall, the four new vendors are: Lito's Empanadas, Firenze Italian Street Food, Tiger Ceviche and Pierogi Crib.

With the weather now conducive to travel for lunch, I made my way over to try one of the new places. First choice was Tiger Ceviche but when perusing the menu, they use tilapia for all their fish. Tilipia? I didn't think that was really fish.....next.

Hit up Firenze Italian Street Food and their 'Spicy' sandwich. All in all it was good, but rather thin on the hearty ingredients (thankfully it was on skinny bread product). Not going to make the 'gotta have again' list.

Also, Smoke Street and Steam (one of the top spots there, imo) has been out of commission for more than a month now. I FB messaged him in early March when he wasn't around and he said it was an 'equipment issue' that he hoped to have fixed ASAP. I hope it works out for the guy. He was shorthanded and slow to produce, but man was it good!

So the hope that Street Smoke and Steam would recover from 'equipment issues' (see above post) never happened.....

In it's place will be the soon to open JoKer's Cajun Kitchen. Menu peek shows they will jump on the continually escalating price structure for downtown lunches (and breakfast, an $11 biscuit sandwich??) - just hoping the quality will match.

Get ready for four new vendors and more items from three existing vendors at longtime West Loop food hall the Chicago French Market. Blue Spot Sushi and Joker’s Cajun Kitchen are newly-open, while Saigon Sisters’ Bang Chop Thai Kitchen and Jianbing Chinese street food are coming in October, according to a news release.

Chicago’s French Market has a new vendor selling Chinese street food, including scallion pancakes. It’s called Jianbing.

Demera now has a stall selling Ethiopian food.

All in all, the place looks like it's thriving.

And the Jianbing place is spot-on, at least the couple plain (no-protein) ones I've had so far. A joy to have jianbing back in my life.

And, though I didn't see it noted anywhere above, Tiger Ceviche (which I enjoyed on my one visit) appears to be gone permanently.

Very cool, though it may be a while as I never seem to find close-in parking and walking blocks in sub-zero temps, even for Jianbing, is a non-starter.

Two new entrants to the dining scene here:

Garafuna Playa - an outpost of the southside restaurant serving Caribbean food. Just had the jerk chicken with rice&beans. Sauce over the top was flavorful and perfectly spiced. Very tasty stuff, definitely return visit worthy. They also have beef or chicken stew that looked good. Home store is highly rated by the usual suspects.

Turkitch - Another satellite, this one from Diversey Ave. Website shows it to be a chain with franchise info available? Food looked good, there was a small group that had just walked up and commented they had been waiting for it to open in this space - they were fans of the northside location.

These are side by side in the middle of the market.

Longtime West Loop food hall Chicago French Market will feature a diminished vendor lineup this winter due to a limited pool of customers in the area — a result of the pandemic that’s become a daily struggle for many downtown restaurants. Some vendors, including an outpost of local Belizian restaurant Garifuna Flava, seafood spot Happy Lobster, and Turkitch Turkish Kitchen, will go into “partial hibernation” until March 1, according to a news release.

We happened to be in the French Market and stopped by Jian, the jianbing purveyor mentioned above. We split a jian bing with smoked bacon, avocado, and cheese and enjoyed it outside on one of the last warm days of the year. I'd not had a jianbing before, but found it to be quite tasty, with deliciously layered flavors and textures.

The sitting area was full of customers, and there continues to be a pretty interesting mix of vendors there--more interesting than a lot of the glossier food halls downtown, I'd say.
