    Jet’s Pizza
    1805 N Harlem Ave, Chicago
    (and other locations)

I was just watching the Bears game and during a player interview he mentioned
Not Chicago, not New York, Jet’s all the way
That jiggled my memory of both the restaurant at this location and friends mentioning how good Detroit style is.

I wonder if anyone has tried it? I know a taste is in my future.

I saw that interview as well and laughed. I just had Buddy's in Novi, MI last weekend (and it was great as always). Jet's is not true Detroit style other than it's square and has carmelized cheese. But I have to still say Jet's square pizza is my favorite chain pizza and I have no problem with it. I even like the sausage.

Funny to see my last comment in this Jet's thread was right before I made it to Detroit in 2017 and tried Buddy's. I've not only been back many times to Detroit (going back a lot for business), I lived in the suburbs the entire summer last year so I was able to hit all of the famous Detroit style pizzerias. All of the ones I had were great and I still like Jet's as well.

Well, I made it over last Friday.

Detroit Style Deep Dish (not true Detroit style)

    Jet's Pizza
    1805 N Harlem Ave, Chicago

A step above the other fast and cheap pizza places. It’s all about the crust.

My preconceptions were; thick, doughy, just barely enough toppings to get by. Not so.

    1D1C73C5-5163-4A97-B1BA-03AA12D04188.jpeg 8 Corner

We ordered the famous 8 corner which was actually 2 small, rectangular pizzas together to give you a large. With each piece having 2 outside edges gave you more of the nicely crunchy, browned cheese, well cooked dough that you came for.

    FFE0323B-C3A7-4F4A-8CBC-CB9554B64706.jpeg Caramelized edges

If you order the sausage pizza it was heavier on the sauce, cheese which gave a nice balance to the crust. Even though the slices were large they were still manageable to eat by hand with a little droop. It was more like a double dough rather than the traditional Chicago pan. There was a little urgency initially to take a bite before the toppings slid. The sausage was in little, almost pedals (discs), flavor barely acceptable and plentiful.

The pepperoni side still had a nice amount of cheese but tended more towards the deli style with less sauce. Holding together better upon picking up. Pepperoni was featured in all the graphics in the restaurant. Is it the most popular choice in Detroit? ... or is it easier to display in a non-photo graphic?

    2BB94A68-795A-4080-B9B5-B84088DC2407.jpeg Pepperoni pizza

The crust inside was moist, soft (except where it was in contact with the pan). They have many different flavors that can be added to the outside and we went for the TurboCrust, a combination of butter, garlic and Romano cheese. I as planning to get plain to establish a baseline on this new pizza but the Turbo sounded so good I had to go with it. :)

Almost dripping with the butter mixture prompted constant use of napkins. Imagine breadsticks dipped in a butter garlic sauce. Not a bad thing.

To further guild the lily they also have dipping sauces. With my preconceived notion of too much bread I went with butter garlic. Not necessary with what came with the Turbo. The dipping sauce was served to me cold (boo) and after one dip I decided to pass. My Bride had a revelation using the Ranch Dressing though. Not so much that the dressing was so good but that it went so well with the pizza.

All in all a pretty good pizza! I would never of imagined a pizza of this style making its way into my pizza rotation but it will, especially since My Bride enjoyed it so much.

Worst thing that might turn people off is that it is greasy, buttery. The flavors are alright.

Nationwide, pepperoni is by far the favorite topping. Chicago is an outlier as a sausage centric town.

I view this as a chicken or the egg dilemma. The Italian sausage for pizza (pizza generally of course, but more so this ingredient) in most locations are terrible, flavorless typically-small pellets. Pepperoni is better in most locations. I assume equivalent quality pepperoni is cheaper than sausage, so the industry prefers it that way, otherwise there would have been an innovation to bring standard issue sausage closer to Chicago's.

Your right as it doesn’t hold a candle to Chicago Sausage but it was plentiful and flavorful enough.

Rather than nuggets you described it was more pinched disks. :)

I preferred the sausage pizza as the balance of crust, meat, sauce and cheese was more in line with Chicago style. Droopy with the wetness and weight.

The pepperoni had less sauce so it appeared more bready but not as bready as most cheap chains. The pepperoni wasn’t top of the line either.

Correct. Many locations in Chicago and around the country.

Compared to the other large corporate chains; Domino’s, Little Caesars, Papa John’s, etc this tasty crust would make it top of the heap.

During my life there were occasions where this type of pizza is required and this would be my choice.

It is a great pizza. I make it at home via recipe from SeriousEats.com, though someday I would like to try Jet's.

My family are mostly thin-crust types, but they do like a Detroit over the Chicago stuffed pizza.

I think Jets does a pretty good Detroit style pizza. I’ve never had Buddy’s in Detroit, but have had Paulie Gee’s here and Jets will fill that hankerin’ without the need to travel too far. Try some for the “Big Game” (can’t mention S.B. without sending a check to Roger Goodell) and let LTHers know.

I think I mentioned this a couple of years ago in the dedicated thread to it, but Joanie's Pizza of Long Grove serves an almost identical style pizza to Jet's square pizza. It's so close that you could almost call it the only Jet's location that you can dine-in. I still really like a sausage 4 or 8 corner pizza at Jet's. I had the hand tossed only once and it was a mistake.

I'll be back in Detroit next week, so I'm likely to hit Buddy's at least once and I wouldn't mind taking a ride to the east side in St. Clair Shores to try another highly rated joint appropriately called Detroit Style Pizza Company which I hope is another winner. Ironically there are very few restaurants in Detroit that serve this square style of pizza. Their main pizza is boring, bland hand tossed style pizza and they love Little Caesars in Detroit so go figure.
