While Four Farthings was never great - for the food, at least - the bar had old charm and lots of character. The most recent ownership had ripped out all the existing built-in furniture, closed the dining room for 3+ years, and replaced with dinky ikea-like furniture. I'm surprised the bad management had held the place together for this long.

This space was beautiful, it had potential as a neighborhood joint, and it was completely squandered. Here's to hoping that the Lincoln Park community can revitalize a neighborhood bar (has lost a series of them in the past few years).

We used to go there a lot when it was Four Farthings, especially liked their brunch on weekends, tried to go to Dickens Street several times after the change only to find it locked up during posted business hours (never a good sign). The two times I actually made it inside I didn't find it appealing enough to go out of my way to get back, and we live only a few block away so it wouldn't have taken much.

Greenleaf Thai Cuisine has signs in the windows that they will be closing for remodeling and maintenance September 9 through 23. IIRC they did not do major work on the building when they took over the space from Opart Thai in May or June, 2018. We have had several nice lunches there, but neither I nor anybody else seems to have posted about them. Home page loads slowly.

I posted about this earlier in the thread---have been trying to find out why they closed; their signage is completely gone, phone disconnected, etc.

If I recall correctly, the new management also fired a long time bartender or two, upsetting many of the neighbors. Always sad when management doesn’t recognize what made a place great and destroys it.
With Sedgwicks, Stanley’s and Gamekeepers also closed, this part of Lincoln Park is really lacking for the good neighborhood bar, aside from River Shannon perhaps. Hopefully a good operator can make something work in one of those spaces someday soon.
You sometimes hear a report that a bartender was “fired” from a venue; but that is usually not what occurred.
What effects the departure is management's decision to change the shift of a certain bartender. If somebody is used to working on a Saturday night; to be reassigned to Thursday night is going to result in a lesser tip amount. :!:
This bartender might see this as a wage cut. So that affected person is likely to leave there. Was she | he “fired”? No, but it's swifter and easier to utter instead of "She did not care for the new schedule management was offering her."

You might not know this; but River Shannon is one of a handful of venues run by Lodge Management Group. It is not a small, single-operator corporation. I am keen to visit Pippin's Tavern (@ 806 N. Rush St.). {But not Streeter's Tavern. :!:} It owns a couple of other bars around the intersection of State and Division Sts. (including its namesake).

The family behind Sweety Pies, the bakery that has been serving Skokie residents pies, cookies, cakes and cupcakes for more than a decade, has made a bittersweet decision to close in August.

With customers lining up regularly to purchase pastries baked from secret family recipes, or to order customized cakes for various celebrations, choosing to close Sweety Pies was difficult.

“We haven’t failed. We’ve built our dream and have so many loyal customers, but life has changed a lot for all of us and we’ve all decided that we are moving on to the next phase,” said Dana Davidson.

Well it certainly looks close to opening now. There are signs up on the building and it's all painted.

I also have some info on the menu. For the baby back ribs - "Straight on the grill. No oven, no boiling, no baking, no smoke and no falling off the bone. That's not how we eat/do them. We grill our ribs, pull them when they're nearly finished, chop them individually, toss them in sauce and back onto the grill to finish and caramelize. We sell bones, not slabs. The menu will be extremely limited, in comparison to most BBQ establishments. We don't want to carry a large inventory. We don't want waste. We don't want confusion. When you call or walk-in an order, you know what you want and what you're getting every single time. There will be days that we run specials, adding new items and testing new recipes but the core menu will stay in place like concrete." They also plan using the same back back ribs that Ellegance In Meats has sold. There will also be broasted chicken, grilled corn on the cob, Heirloom blue corn bread (on weekends), fresh cut fries, cole slaw, mac n cheese, seasonal salad with a few specials like BBQ skirt steak sandwiches, blackened shrimp, and jumbo lump crab cakes.

They want to mimic the old Babyback LTD that was in Northbrook (one of my family's favorites). They will be open initially Wed-Sun 4-9 with lunch hours in the spring/summer and some outdoor seating in a fenced in area facing Greenwood. Curious how parking will be with people parking to eat there (in warmer weather) along with carryouts? I also wonder in general what Highwood intends to do about the lack of parking for all these restaurants (with more to come)?

I've heard through the grapevine that Sushi by Bou might be opening a location or two in Chicago sometime soon. This is a NYC establishment (kind of trendy - so I'm sure they'll go downtown or West Loop or something) that now has a handful of locations there and now a few in Miami. It's 30 minute omakase - 12 pieces, for $50. I've had it once here in NYC and it was pretty good. Not the absolute best omakase I've ever had, nor the worst by any stretch, but for $50 it's a decent deal.

Wok N’ Bao, a new eatery serves up customizable bowls, wings and bao aplenty at 36 N. Clinton St is now open in the west loop.
Art and Tyler Mendoza, the father-son team behind new taco hotspot Asadito, opened counter-service restaurant Wok N’ Bao this week, according to a news release. Owners hope to “bridge the gap between American-Chinese food and authentic Chinese food” with made-to-order wok dishes, gua bao, and “M.S.G. wings” (maple, sherry, gochujang), from chef David Wang (Oak + Char, Acadia). Status: Certified Open, 36 N. Clinton Street.

Wok N’ Bao is open from 11 a.m.-8 p.m Monday through Friday.

Sorry to report....Wok 'n Bao - another attempt to create cuisine for the masses using filler ingredients and generic spicing served 'new' style cafeteria (see: Chipotle and Naf-Naf). Had the rice noodle peanut sauce chicken today and it was basically a carton full of noodles with a dozen small chix chunks, 4 snap peas, 3 small red pepper pieces, a large green onion end and I think I spotted a carrot slice. Lacking real peanut flavor in the sauce - non decsript, a bit oily and msg laden (so my headache now tells me).

It was so bad my co-worker who eats anything actually got half way through it and said 'that's enough of this crap'. Just like the Brown Bag Seafood that recently opened on the river, there's just no incentive to go back and try other variations. Sad, really....

Thanks for reporting back on this new restaurant. The Chipotle model for Asian cuisine still hasn't been cracked yet as was for Greek, Mexican, and Middle Eastern cuisine. Also, in downtown most diners are not looking for quality but fast and affordable food while generating enough foot traffic during lunch rushes to drive the business revenue model. I am not sure how much quality and authenticity matters for the downtown office lunch crowd vs. in the suburbs or citywide locations where foot traffic is an issue and a restaurants success depends more on repeat business and word of mouth.

The Chicago Symphony Association has announced the replacement for tesori. From the e-mail sent yesterday:
    Dear Symphony Center Subscriber,

We are pleased to announce that George Jewell Events Catering is the new food service provider at Symphony Center. Coinciding with the launch of the 2019/20 season, Opus Restaurant and Café will officially open at 65 E. Adams St. to serve Symphony Center patrons and the general public on September 19, 2019. Reservations for the 2019/20 season can now be made by calling 312-500-OPUS (6787) or at cso.org/opus. Reservations can also be made through CSO Patron Services at 312-294-3000.

Opus Restaurant offers a new culinary program featuring themed menus inspired by music on individual concert programs. On concert dates, the restaurant serves multiple prix fixe dinners priced at $45. Guests will be served a delightful first course, an elegant appetizer and an unforgettable main course. À la carte options beyond the prix fixe menu will be available to complement the meal, giving patrons the choice to add decadent desserts, fine wine, cocktails, mocktails, beer or other beverages.

Opus Restaurant generally offers two preconcert seatings: a 5:15 lecture & champagne seating and 6:30 seating prior to an 8 pm concert start. Patrons who reserve the 5:15 seating will finish dinner in time to attend the preconcert lecture and then be treated to a complimentary champagne. Seating times vary based on concert start. New for the 2019/20 season, seatings will be offered for Sunday brunch as well as CSO Family Matinees with special kid-friendly options. Visit cso.org/opus for additional seating time details.

On concert dates, Opus Restaurant will be open two hours after the performance ends. Subscribers to CSOA-presented concert series in the 2019/20 season receive a 30% discount on any postperformance dessert or late-menu appetizer when they present their subscriber ID. Additional discount opportunities may be available throughout the season.
    OPUS CAFÉ

Opus Café offers a quick-service casual bistro café experience available daily to the general public from 6 am to 3 pm. This elegant café experience includes gourmet sandwiches, salads, flatbreads, protein bowls and specialty coffees and espresso drinks. Grab and Go options are also available, providing the perfect quick option for concert patrons and downtown commuters alike.

Subscribers to CSOA-presented concert series for the 2019/20 season receive a 15% discount on any fresh menu item or coffee/tea beverage when they present their subscriber ID. Additional discount opportunities may be available throughout the season.

Apparently they will be open in the evening only when evening concerts are scheduled. The whole thing does not seem very well thought out. As of yesterday the get-reservations link on the CSO web site went to the Open Table home page, not to the specific venue's page the way it works from most restaurant's web sites.

I was having lunch today at Pa Lian in Wheaton, and because the owner recognized me from previous visits, he came over to chat. Or more like vent. He wanted to know if I had any idea why Tea Leaf Garden would close. He was really upset -- perhaps because he fears the same fate. But he said he thought Chicago was big enough to support two Burmese restaurants. He came over and asked several times what I thought happened. I have no idea -- but I did come home and check, and a Google search comes up with a "Permanently Closed" banner for Tea Leaf Garden. So I guess Pa Lian is now the only Burmese spot in Chicagoland.

The CSO owns the building where Opus is going. It is part of Symphony Center.

I did not quote all of the e-mail, but in the rest it states that George Jewell Catering is now doing all catering and concessions for Symphony Center. I do not know the financial arrangements, but it seems quite likely that the catering company is not paying rent and is operating under contract.

Edit to amplify remarks. The company that ran tesori is primarily a catering company that also operates(d) two restaurants: tesori and Park Grill. They also did the catering and concessions in Orchestra Hall as well as the Richard and Helen Thomas Club, which is available for donors above a certain level.

The new arrangement seems similar to what Jewell does in the Opera House albeit there is a different caterer for the Graham Room. The Florian Opera Bistro on the third floor is more casual and left us underwheled the one time we dined there before an opera. We are giving the Pedersen Room on the ground floor a shot before our first opera this season. I do not have a lot of hope, but with Lloyds closed and One North's unholy noise level on Friday evenings (loud enough to impair my hearing) we do not have any really good options within my wife's mobility capacity.

Philz coffee is opening up a new location at 1040 Davis in Evanston sometime in October. Apparently the chain originated in San Francisco, and recently opened up stores in Hyde Park and Wicker Park. They also have a store scheduled to open up in Lincoln Park on 9/26 too. I hope the Evanston store does not put the coffee/ sandwich shop across the street out of business.
