In practical terms, I have not yet been asked. When ordering food from the touch screen kiosk, nobody asks either.

Everything being upside down presently, I think they have bigger things to chase down.

White granulated sugar is usually processed with bone char so it’s not vegan.

How can you get past the person checking for membership at the door to get to the food court?

Most people walk in the other entrance, which may or may not officially be an "exit."
I walk in that side for the service desk, the tire dept, and the food court if I don't want anything else. Someone once told me to walk in that side, and it's not a big deal at all. Haven't been inside a Costco in months, no idea if protocol has changed, but it was never a big deal for 3-4 years running. The card check at the door, is not some final membership check anyway, I don't think you can buy anything w/o showing your membership at checkout. - Except the food counter - unless they check there now, too.

There are actually a number of things you can do without membership. Going to the side that's outside of the checkout is always possible -- otherwise how would you get a membership?
Illinois law also requires them to admit you to purchase liquor or prescriptions without a membership. IIRC there is a surcharge if you purchase without a membership card.
A gift card can be used as admission, then you use other payment and keep coming in (not sure if an empty card can be used at checkout).

As stated above, you can always walk in via the exit without showing a card. If you are there to eat in the food court, that's great.

At the food court in Glenview, they had the safe distance terminals to order and pay for food via credit card. If you want to pay cash, then you have to chase somebody down or add it to your bill when checking out.

At Glenview, the kiosks asked for no proof of membership. I paid and waited a very short time for the strawberry sundae for my Mom.

Presently, you can only order the cheese or pepperoni pizza. I ordered pepperoni once, but my family prefers the fully dressed pizza. When I do order pizza, I call as I walk in, give them my time estimate, add it to the bill at check-out, then wait for the pizza to finish. If they are not super busy, their pizzas can be ready in 10 minutes. The longest wait has been 30 minutes.

If you decide not to have a membership in the future and have tires or electronics under warranty, keep your membership card until all expires. I changed my membership and still keep the old card to address warranty issues.

Run don't walk for the Prime tomahawks at Costco, only $12.99/lb! Bought a two-pack a couple of weekends ago (chose a pack where the marbling appeared speckled, almost like wagyu), food-savered them individually and placed in the freezer, and today cooked one sous vide then seared on the grill. It was so tender and flavorful! We'll see how long that second steak stays in the freezer....

I had to google what a tomahawk was. This sounds wonderful.

I love the idea of tomahawk steaks until I hold the package. Paying for all that inedible bone is just a deal breaker for me, I always end up with strips or ribeyes.

I've been a Costco member for almost a year now and my membership is coming up for renewal. I'm not sure if it's worth it for me as I'm single now and don't really need to buy in bulk. The items I like are their Filets and NY Strips.
I have read and been told that Costco's gift cards can be used by non-members.
But how does one get around the fact that at check out they ask for a member ID card?

The gift card can be used for entry.

I agree that with tomahawks, the visual often becomes the gimmick. This is why I never previously bought one, because they tend to run around $30/lb, not necessarily prime designation, and the bone might weigh close to a pound. At this price, however, it was more than worth it. One steak fed two of us "good eaters" for dinner, with let's call it one lunch portion left, for about $30 total. It was easily in the top five of the best steaks we have ever made at home

Plenty of Bounty paper towels and Kirkland TP today, Costco in Niles. No, nada, none, Coke in cans though there was loads of Sea Cucumber and Chinese Sausage on hand.

Plus, annoyingly, they switched the entire store around yet again.

I loved the frozen French Onion soup they had in a 4 pack. I can no longer find it as I've been to three Costco's only to find they don't have it anymore.

Also meant to comment that I saw people (just a couple) giving out food samples at the Mettawa Costco yesterday. Maybe it's been mentioned before that this has been resumed, but I was surprised to see it.

Over a month ago, Costco advised it would resume food sampling. In the same breath, they advised it would be slow roll out.

Did you notice any changes in how they manage their sampling?

Several stands had display-only food.
The only thing you could actually eat was an Oreo that had been placed in a waxed paper envelope
