Made the family very happy yesterday when I brought home some onion and plain bialys along with NYBB's chive cream cheese, nova, and sliced corned beef. Any thoughts on who has the best bialy in Chicagoland?

2 items that are almost always in our house.

We use to think that Once Upon A Bagel was good until we discovered NYB&B. Now we refuse to eat OUaB.

I was at NYBB on Touhy to pick up some bagels around lunch time. So I ordered a pastrami sandwich on rye with mustard. It was a surprisingly good sandwich. Just the right amount of fat for me. Note that the Dempster location does not serve sandwiches.

They are good about Covid precautions. They only allow 6 people in the shop at a time, and people are very good about following that rule and waiting outside if necessary.

We were there on Tuesday afternoon and waited about ten minutes from the outside line to the inside line. Their bagels and cream cheese spreads are just as great as they've alway been. Great Vienna beef pastrami and corned beef. Their deli sandwich specials are still the best deal in town. Be sure to have your sandwich meats warmed.

New York Bagel & Bialy, Touhy.

Sunday morning Mother's Day 7:17am. Line around the corner, all the way West from the door and around the freaking corner.

Wanted fresh, have bialys and bagels in the freezer, as well as a pack of Costco lox. No way I'd wait in that line unless I was completely out of bagels and bialys.

On the plus side, Fresh Farms, Touhy, was not crowded in the least. They open at 7am.

I had planned to go after a meeting in Skokie yesterday but it ran long and I was afraid of encountering a similar line so remembered your rec for JB’s deli —called and placed the order for bagels, hand cut Nova, cream cheese, and a few deli items for our Mother’s Day brunch and made it to our dinner reservation down the street with time to spare.

I always preferred the Touhy location, but that line was really pissing me off when the weather was sub-20 degrees over the winter. It forced me to give the Dempster location a try, and the quality of bagels (and bialys, I assume) was every bit as good without the crowd. Only difference is they still operate as cash-only.

I too usually hit up NYB&B along with FF in the same trip. FF didn't have the smoked trout I've become hooked on last weekend, and just like NYB&B, their having a second (of more than 2) location saved me as Golf Rd was loaded with trout. I've temporarily shifted to both alternate locations.

Granted, I live walking distance away, but it mystifies me why more people don't buy their bagels at the Skokie location, instead of the Lincolnwood location, especially since the bagel baking done at this location is exemplary.

Granted, no deli sandwiches are available, but between the cream cheese and lox in the cooler and pristine and fresh bagels, it just doesn't get much better than this!

Good call, JB's gets their bagels and bialys from New York Bagel and Bialy on Dempster. (owner said Touhy does not deliver)

I go to Touhy NYBB 99.99% of the time, its reflex/habit plus its closer to my house. Far as Fresh Farms goes, most of the time its Touhy but lately I've started to ~ocasionallly~ go to the FF on Golf. Its larger, cleaner, seems to have a wider selection of items and, on a purely subjective note, the staff seems happier/more interactive at that location.

Calling ahead is definitely the move here but still not fool-proof, judging from my experience yesterday.

Popped into JB's for my first time at about 12:20 yesterday to get a couple sandwiches for dine-in. Got those sandwiches at about 1:30....

It was an absolute mess and they just could not keep orders straight. They were flying in from the phone and Door Dash (among others) and it seemed more time was spent taking and organizing orders than actually fulfilling them. For the life of me, I don't know why they didn't cut online ordering off for a period of time. Saw more than 1 person come in for their order an hour+ after placing, and they still hadn't started the order.

The woman in front of us had about the same order as above, minus the misc items, and it STILL took her about 45 minutes in and out.

I will say they were very friendly about it, but I was a bit disappointed that nothing was offered to compensate.

I have been told to wait at pharmacies, restaurants, stores....pretty much anywhere you can think of, but there is a big difference between a couple of minutes and over an hour.

I ordered bagels, lox and cream cheese from Russ & Daughters for Mother’s Day.
Delivered to my front door last Friday.
I’ve spent too much time in line at NYB&B!
While NYB&B bagels are very good, The ones from New York take me back to when i lived on Long Island, they are that good.
BTW call and order direct from Russ & Daughters and skip Goldbelly.

Call me a skeptic, but I find freshly-baked bagels disappointing after sitting around for half a day, so even the best New York bagel must lose something when it's overnighted.

    1. Youre a skeptic.
    2. Only buy as many bagels as you can eat in a 24 hour period. If you want more, go back to NYB&B. Its like donuts. No one buys donuts for eating in a couple days, you eat them fresh!

I think that depends on the bagel. Kaufman's are my favorite if I get them that day, but I find NYB&B seems to have a slightly better shelf life, and freeze better too.

Uh, unless you live 45 miles away and rarely go into the city. Maybe every other month, I'll drive to the Touhy store and buy 2 dozen onion bialys. I freeze them in sixes in the those long cellophane sleeves. They defrost fine, maybe only 95% as fresh, but that's still miles better than anything else out there.

Really? This is something I had not previously viewed. :o
For me, the advantage to the Lincolnwood address is its proximity to the Edens expressway {Returning to the abode from a sexpositive munch in Wheeling in the 1987 Sprint, I stopped in and bought six bagels late night which wound up being the last fresh bakery items consumed by my dad. :!:}, and thus, its proximity to transit lines, including the to-be-discontinued route #54A North Cicero bus.
Here is the subsequent edit to splice in the photographs of the bialy hot dog which was consumed last August on the lawn on N. Skokie Blvd. awaiting a southbound #54A bus that somehow was delayed. Image Image
I will give the Skokie location a shot the next time.

There is also Greenwood Deli on Demptster in Niles (right on the Niles/Park Ridge border) as a great option as well. Honestly, I'm not sure exactly what the deal is with it - it is clearly related to NYBB and I consider the bagels to be identical, all the same cream cheeses, cured fish, baked goods, deli meats, it reminds me of almost just a smaller floorplan of the Touhy location. I don't know if NYBB owns it or it is some sort of franchise run by someone else with all of NYBB staff, recipes, supplies, etc. Maybe someone where knows and can enlighten me.

But there is almost never a crowd, parking is ample, and the staff is friendlier than the Touhy location. I'm unsure of how the prices compare, though if I had to bet I'd say everything is nominally more expensive.

I wouldn't be surprised if the smaller crowds have an influence on the friendliness of the staff

I've been to all 3 at some point, and agree that the bagels seem to have the same high level of deliciousness. The thing to be mindful of is the open hours; according to the Googles Greenwood closes at 3 [2 on Sunday], Skokie closes at 5, and Lincolnwood is always open.

Enjoy every sandwich [especially on a bagel].
