There's a new sign above the door at 2817 W Diversey for Souk Mediterranean Grill. This space is the former home of L. Patron and most recently, Chikis N Grill. I didn't get close enough to notice an ETA.

Raising Cane has been on my radar for a while. Driving down Harlem with Ellen lunchtime we passed a Raising Cane, right next to Portillo's and down the street from Cluver's. Portillo's was slammed, line of 40-cars, Culver's busy, Raising Cain 2-cars.

We each ordered a Box, 4-fried chicken tenders, Texas Toast, fries, slaw, Cane sauce, drink, just under $8 each. Fries limp, Texas Toast limp, Cane sauce insipid, tenders not crisp and juicy to the point of watery. I'd guess they were brined or vac-tumbled with some sort of salt/phosphate to enhance water retention. Bland flavor. Slaw was fine, Ellen liked her sweet tea.

We each ate one tender and called it a day. I had a quesadilla when we got home, Ellen a ham sandwich.

Raising Cane, One and done. If you are reading this post then, unless you have young children, no other choices for 75-miles or drunk Raising Cane is probably not for you.

They should bypass the kids meal and go right to the Caniac Combo, 6-tenders, more fries, sauce, drink etc. Caniac, coincidentally, is also the name of a Turkish made handgun, though spelled with a k.

First time at Morton's 1050 N State (knew the address from memory) was with my dad in the 70's on a Chicago trip from Milwaukee. Just him and me, I thought I was James Bond and Carol Channing's 5th husband all rolled into one. :)

I thought then, and still do, that Morton's 1050 N State was where god went when she was in the mood for a steakhouse steak. None of the other Morton's, or steakhouses in general, have ever evoked that type of feeling.

    Morton's 1050 N State, count me a Fan!

Taqueria Chingon opens today in Bucktown on Western Ave.

Le Bouchon Chef Goes From French to Mexican With Upcoming Taqueria. Oliver Poilevey is teaming up with former Le Sardine chef Sotero Gallego and chef Marcos Ascencio for Taqueria Chingón.

Poilevey says the inspiration for the food comes from Ascencio parties where he’s tasted the chef’s food. The two decided they could add to Chicago’s taco landscape with two trompos. One will be loaded with al pastor. Poilevey says they’re getting their pork from a farmer in the Ozarks. The second will be for vegetarians stacked with celery root, onions, and portobello mushrooms: “It’s really good, I gave them to meat eaters and didn’t tell them,” Poilevey says.

I haven't been travelling the streets as much, but just noticed the bad mojo shack on Ogden in Brookfield - it housed Burger Colony, Taco-bout-it, Xelva, etc - seems to be setting up for a new venture "Tom-n-Lou's on 34". Appears to be the usual burger/beef spot, but I can't find any info on it.

Will it be another quality product that just doesn't go in that location?

The 24 hour Burger King at 1740 Orrington in Evanston, has closed for good. It sounds like the building is going to be torn down and the property redeveloped.

According to the article, whatever is built on that location will have to have ground floor retail. I hope they don't try to build another condo or apartment building. The city does not need any more of those.

A blast from my past. Many a weekend evening was spent there not for the food but for the scenery. This would have been ‘86-‘90. BK, JK Sweets, and Buffalo Joe’s all have fond memories for me.

Couple moves I discovered while walking my dog today (not sure if this is the right thread... But a move is sort of like a closing and reopening, right?).

Steingolds deli is moving from 1840 W. Irving to 3737 N. Southport.

Caro Mio is moving from 1833 W. Wilson to Lincoln Square. I apologize that I don't have the address, but I believe it's the 4600 block of Lincoln. The sign in the window said they're closed as of December 14th for the move (I would have taken a picture, but my dog wasn't in the mood to hang around).

Hopefully they'll both be paying lower rent and getting higher foot traffic. I'll miss that cozy Caro Mio location... It would be nice if they can recreate some of that atmosphere in the new digs.

Caro Mio's web site doesn't have anything. Their Facebook page indicates 4603 N. Lincoln, the former location of Taco in a Bag. That location certainly has a lot higher foot traffic but is in stretch noted for correspondingly high rents.

I have to imagine that Taco in a Bag location is much smaller than the presence Caro Mio had on Wilson. I don't want to judge it before seeing the build-out though, so I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

    A few bits I noticed..

    1) Another place to get Jianbing in Chicago now at the new retail plaza in Chinatown at 2300 S Archer (Canal & Archer). They also serve those egg bubble waffles.

Here's a video on the place (in Chinese):

    Open Monday - Sunday 10am - 7pm
    Closed Tuesday

    2) A new sushi place opened at the new Jefferson Square mall at 2105 S Jefferson St, in the new massive Asian market 88 Marketplace. Apparently the quality is actually good, and importing fish from Japan. They have $55, $88, and $123 omakase options - cheaper and more common in places like here in NYC. COVID-19 restrictions = none of that right now though because it should be dine-in only.

Now he’s striking out on his own to offer authentic dishes from his native Thailand in Avondale. Eathai, located at the corner of Kedzie Avenue and George Street, is having a soft opening Friday.
