I was out on 355 today so I popped into the Meijer off the Boughton exit to look for Carnation Malted Milk, and I was in luck. $4.39 (I think) for 13 oz. They had two types available: chocolate and original. I bought the original.
Having it side-by-side with the original Ovaltine, they are definitely different. Whatever the "natural flavor" is in Ovaltine, it detracts a bit from the pure maltiness of the drink (but it gives that signature Ovaltine flavor.) It's not bad and while it is recognizable as malt, the Carnation is straight-up malt flavor. Back when I used to brew I used a lot of dried malt extract, and tasting the Carnation powder very much reminded me of that flavor and smell.
If you're looking for it at Meijer, it's not by the coffee and hot chocolate section -- it's by the chocolate syrups section in/near baking goods where the Quik and Ovaltine are. (I thought the Quik would be in the hot chocolate and coffee aisle, but no dice.)
The Ovaltine is easier to dissolve in cold milk, though.
