We were walking around in my old neighborhood earlier (Gold Coast) and noticed a new sushi place that also serves Shabu Shabu as well. It is from the same "Friends" people who own Friends Sushi and Friends Ramen. This is right next to both on State & Chicago in the spot of a former bank, across from where Whole Foods is moving to.

It's actually conveyor belt sushi and AYCE. Looks as if it's been open for around 1 month now.

    Friends Station
    800 N State St

    Website states Mon - Sun 4pm - 10pm but Google states 12pm - 10pm Sun - Thu, 12pm - 11pm Fri - Sat.

Side note: I also noticed a sign for a tea place a few doors up (Vig Tea?) in the home of a former Nail Salon next to Subway. Can't find anything on it but worth a small mention.

Rakkan Ramen is opening up their first Chicago shop in Uptown near Argyle in a bit. They were just granted a building permit for the buildout and it shows up as a location now on their website coming soon. They are a ramen chain from Japan who has locations in the US in the LA area, Houston, near Atlanta, and Boulder (CO). Also opening in Las Vegas soon. Reviews of their DTLA shop look fairly promising.

I believe they were supposed to open in 2020, but COVID....(https://rakkanramen.com/rakkan-coming-to-chicago-il/). Original plans were for 3 stores in the area, so we'll see what happens.

    Opening in the near future..

Looking at the menu. Weird/interesting that all of the broths are vegetable based... But it's not a veg/vegan thing since there's still pork, chicken, and eggs in the bowls (although there are vegan options).

The Noodle in Wilmette is closing. Last day of service is this Saturday, February 19.

    Announcement made February 14, 2022

We have truly enjoyed being a part of your lives. The time has come to close The Noodle Café. We want to focus our time and efforts on continuing to grow our Depot Nuevo Restaurant. The pandemic, inflation, staffing and a desire to simplify our lives has led us to this hard and emotional decision. We are proud of The Noodle Café and it will always have a special place in our heart.

We will close after serving dinner on Saturday, February 19th. We will be open for both dine in and carry out service this week.

Again, thank you for your love, support and sharing your lives with us over the past 32 years. We look forward to seeing you more in the future at Depot Nuevo Restaurant.

    Rob and Ann Garrison, owners

Soulé, the West Town soul food restaurant that has, since it opened in 2017, has become as known for its celebrity visitors as for its wings, grits, and fried catfish, will be expanding to a second location later this summer, not near downtown, but in North Lawndale, where chef and owner Bridgette Flagg grew up.

    2 bits of news..

    1) Hello Jasmine (Taiwanese food) could be opening up a 3rd location in Lincoln Square. Building permit was issued yesterday to build out a new restaurant at 4705 N Lincoln Ave next to Oromo Cafe. The owner of the permit is the owner of Hello Jasmine.

So either that, or perhaps a new concept? Stay tuned..

    2) Happy Lamb Hot Pot could be opening in Lincoln Park at 2707 N Clark St a little south of Diversey and near dim sum place D Cuisine. A new building permit was issued on Wednesday for the build out of a new restaurant. The owner on the permit appears to be the owner of Happy Lamb Hot Pot.

As I believe I noted before, the same owner was issued a permit in October for a new restaurant at 3207 S Halsted St in Bridgeport.

    Stay tuned for more..

I've had beer from Vietnam and cannot answer this question. The beer was similar to anything else.

But it is cool that they'll brew their own AND you can get a great bowl of pho there to go with fresh beer (hopefully good beer).

That is (or was) some bonafide, old-skool suburban sh*t! A venerable, long-standing business operating out of a converted house in a mostly residential setting. They just don't do that kind of thing anymore. For years, Zier's -- just down the street from Norshore -- has been my meat house of choice but Norshore will definitely be missed. :(

Rockwell Bottle Shop and Coffee was open for business last weekend, maybe earlier. This has been a very slow work in progress. IIRC the liquor license application was for package sales only although that may have changed.

Look for Sultan's Market to finally open up their Pilsen location in the coming months. They were just issued a permit to build out their store at 1738 W 18th St near the Pink Line stop there.

Block Club Chicago wrote about this in October 2020:
    https://blockclubchicago.org/2020/10/01 ... ore-sites/

While we're at it, it looks like they opened up a few weeks ago in the same building as their restaurant Masada at 2204 N California in Logan Square

Open now - 2204 N California Ave (Logan Square)
