    HI,

This morning I was visiting the Aldi next door to SSGS on Golf Road.

There was a ghost sign: 'and sushi.'

There was a banner featuring 'All you can eat meat.' On the door was a sign stating this is offered at $34.99 per person. If there were restrictions on this offer, I did not get close enough to read the details.

I was there at 10:30 AM, so I did not check the hours. At that time, it was clearly shop closed.

    Regards,
    Cathy2

I had the AYCE bbq there recently. In spite of some vague signage in the windows, this location (now also calling themselves San Soo North) is not live charcoal but gas. I can't remember all the details but given the a la carte pricing, AYCE seemed like the best deal. You start out by choosing up to 3 meats and can order more after those have been eaten. No leftovers can be taken with. Maybe there was a 90-minute time limit. We ordered 3 and then 2 more.

It comes with a small gyeranjjim, an order of japchae and maybe some soup and some mandoo (it wasn't entirely clear to me what was included and what we may have ordered separately). Unlike on Western, the banchan selection was paltry and extremely limited. They also tack an 18% service charge on top of it. I'd never leave that small of a tip on my own but I wasn't paying and I didn't want to coach our hosts, who probably left only that amount. In their defense, sadly, I have to say that service was dismal and the restaurant wasn't more than 2/3 full. Overall, other than the company, not a particularly pleasant experience on any level but I'm not sure the AYCE had anything to do with it.

That's quite a change from the last time I was there, but it's been about two pandemics. Banchan was abundant, but AYCE wasn't in the menu. Trying to remember if I was eating with Koreans, that may have made a difference.

If you scroll halfway down this page, there is the sign I saw and the now ghosted '& Sushi.'

Going through this thread before posting, I saw other names associated with this location. It must be confusing to everyone involved.

    Thanks for the updates.

We stopped by SSGS on Western the evening of Sept 25th, and found them closed with a scary looking City of Chicago “do not enter” sign on it. Unclear from the sign what’s going on, but it’s not open.

    Anyone know what’s up?

That's something I haven't seen before, but it's the Building department, not Health. That makes me think there was some sort of physical safety issue (fire? flood? hvac?). Nothing on their web or facebook pages.

I did research for the Korean comfort food budae jjigae at San Soo Gap San in the city, in fact it won as best tasting & best value as well. The corresponding article 'A Big Bowl of Wrong...or Right', is accessible on this site.

But every time I visited the Western Ave. location, my clothes smelled, and frankly it looked like a fire trap. Food was awesome though.

I can't recall ever being in a K-BBQ place where this wasn't the case. I never considered it a potential danger, just the nature of the beast. Note to self: leave your coat in the car! :D

I believe it was the now closed Wooil restaurant on Milwaukee Av that had a fire suppression system with properly coded red tanks and piping for Halon that made a lasting impression on me as a former Fire Marshall at a Nuclear Power Plant.
SSGS never really worried me as the food and alcohol quickly obliterated my awareness of anything else.
Soon as SSGS opens, I will be back!
None of these puny gas systems with a piece of charcoal or two for me!!!

Not exactly contrite but at least the situation is being resolved. After them being in business for 29 years, I wonder what prompted this now.

    Reading the report……
coal dust has built up over the years from an inadequate mechanical exhaust and presents a fire hazard.
    Probably an old antiquated system?
I also know how things used to work in the City?

Not in the slightest surprising. I shop at the Aldi next to it and the place is always empty. I stopped going because I got tired of the "cranky auntie" nature of the service.

It's often been full (or nearly so) when I was there but I really disliked their "new" AYCE model. Between that and their lack of live charcoal fire, this place wasn't much of a draw.

And yeah, the service definitely went from charming to uninviting.
