I was at the Wilmette Jewel on Green Bay yesterday, and they had Nestle Abulita hot chocolate tablets, which are normally $5.99 for six tablets on clearance for $.99. They also had Koop's horseradish mustard on clearance for $.49. I was charged $.87 instead, but I had a J4U coupon for $1.50, and so two bottles of it only cost me $.24. I did get charged too much for the Breyers ice cream, but I took it to customer service, and showed the $2.99 price on my phone. I also had a J4U coupon for $2 off two. You might look at your Jewel to see if the mustard and how chocolate are on clearance too. When I told the cashier how much the hot chocolate was, she asked if I took them all, and I told her there were still four packages left. I also got two extra rewards too, because I spent over $40.

All of the major grocery store up on Passover supplies REGARDLESS of the Jewish population in the area. The Jewel stores in Woodstock and Crystal Lake would have these goods in CLEARANCE through the end of June. I think that you actually better deals in areas without a significant Jewish populations.

Locally in Arizona, even in stores where the population is 30% Native American and 60% Hispanic, the local Safeway and Fry's stores have clearance shelves crammed with Passover matzohs, matzoh meals, Gefilte fish and the like. Personally, I cannot believe that the product line is profitable for them.

I agree. Just before Passover, I bought a 5 lb box of Yehuda Matzah for $4.99 at the HP Jewel. During the rest of the year, matzah runs around $3-$4 per 1 lb box.

I went to Jewel on Thursday to pick up two prescriptions and get some rewards that were going to expire on 4/30. and a few other sale items. I went to the Chicago Ave. Jewel. I had to wait in line for 45 minutes to get my two prescriptions. I would have picked them up on Wednesday, but it took them 1 1/2 hours to fill the two prescriptions, and by the time they finally finished, I only had 19 minutes to get to the pharmacy before they closed at 8:00. I thought that was cutting it too close. When I was finally able to get my prescriptions, I told the pharmacy tech that I had a coupon for good rx for one of the bottles of eye drops. He told me with my Medicare part D, that it was almost as cheap, and so he he decided not to ring up the coupon. I would have saved $.64 using the coupon, but my J4U points did go through, and so I got one additional point. When I picked up $64 worth of prescriptions a few weeks ago, I did not get my J4U points. When I asked about it, they told me to go to CS. A friend of mine says that happens to her son, and they tell him to go to CS, and CS does not know what to do.

I then went to do some grocery shopping, and I had some rewards that were going to expire, and so I got those. On the J4U account I use the most, I only needed 21 additional points to get another reward, and I figured out I had over $21 in my cart, but when I went to self checkout to checkout, I was short 2 points. One of the things I bought was the $1.49 half gallon of Kemps milk. I assume that does not get counted when the J4U points get applied, and that is why I was short two points. Is that true?

I stopped in to my Jewel (Arlington Heights on Rand Rd.) on Sunday to find the interior largely torn up and people frantically emptying displays. Looks like they are doing a major reconstruction. Is this widespread, or just at my Jewel?

I think they just remodeled the store putting some new flooring, new standing freezers, remodeled the bathrooms and redid the aisles in terms of where many items are located.

I kinda figured that was the deal because they were redoing the alcohol section and it seemed they were working westward across. That location desperately needed a reboot. I hated the stocking, decor and setup.

Guessing that's what's happening at my Jewel, too -- self-check moved to the opposite end of the building, lots of flooring being torn up. Must be a daunting task, tackling a redesign without closing!

    I have a question.

Back in the 2000s, did Dominicks (Safeway) and Jewel-Osco (Albertsons) receive subsidies from the state or federal government to place stored in food deserts in the Chicago area?

I have been trying to find references but have been unable to.

Your question prompted me to look into it. It's very difficult to find proof of the negative, but Rahm's use of TIF (and whatever else) in the 2013-14 context of bringing a Whole Foods to Englewood is described in seminal terms that make me think not. The food desert research I see cited in a few articles covered 2007-14, which would be weird if there had been subsidies to remedy the problem right before that.
