The Montrose Avenue property was previously home to two real estate offices and, more recently, the Chicago Waldorf School.

City records show construction permits to convert the interior of the building into a restaurant were approved May 23.

Much farther back the site had a German restaurant in a frame building, which burned down. They rebuilt with a single story building but did not last long. Later a Bulgarian restaurant and coffee shop went in. They built the partial second story shown in the picture in the Block Club story. The rest of the roof was made into a patio, which could probably be rebuilt.

The area around the intersections of Lincoln, Montrose and Leavitt is becoming quite a restaurant grouping. Small Cheval should fit right in.

From the Village of Wilmette in February

Small Cheval (1939 Wilmette Avenue, Downtown Wilmette) is targeting a late summer opening. Small Cheval will serve burgers, fries, and milkshakes for al fresco and to-go dining. Small Cheval’s exterior improvements for outdoor dining have been approved by the Village and they are working with the Village’s Historic Preservation and Appearance Review Commissions to ensure signage is appropriate for this important local landmark.

We had a late lunch at the Hyatt office building outpost of Small Cheval last Thursday following the CAC cruise and a long riverwalk (not a Hyatt hotel, the nattily suited security guy at what looked like a hotel lobby desk pointed out, even though "everybody asks that.")

Our order: single cheeseburger, fries, cheese bun, sodas. While I didn't think it was an astoundingly great burger, it ranks up there. Same for the fries: Ms. R said they are what McDonalds fries used to be when McDonalds fries were still great. That's actually a pretty high bar for plain shoestring fries. The cheese bun is just a cheeseburger sans burger, a pretty good treat for the price as both bun and cheese are above the ordinary. Worth noting especially for the area: Sodas are fill-your-own. Very nice location and view, too, on the west side of the main branch across from Beatnik.
