I read an article in Chicago Mag (January 06?) that the founder of Jimmy Johns is planning on opening a burger place similar to in-and-out burger on Michigan Ave across from Millennium park. Alas, I was reading the magazine at the dentists and forgot the name and address. Can anyone help me out?

    I don't know and I don't care.

If the hamburgers reflect the quality of JJ sandwiches, my prediction for 2006 is.....Where's the beef? commercials will be revived.

I agree about jj sandwiches. I'm a longtime potbelly fan from my days @ DePaul. I was just curious because it would be relatively close to my office so it would be worth a try.

I also noticed an about-to-open hamburger place on Clark St. in Andersonville which I think is called "Hamburger Mary's" - or something like it. (The logo is a cartoon female bearing burgers.) Couldn't tell if it was a chain or not. Anyone know anything about it?

Hamburger Mary's has been previously discussed here.

This crain's article about Fatburger (which I linked to in the Fatburger thread), mentions the original poster's original query:

Enter Gregg Majewski. Mr. Majewski, the former CEO of Jimmy John's Franchise Inc., plans to open a California-style burger stand in November on Adams Street just off of Michigan Avenue near the Art Institute of Chicago. The restaurant, called Patty Burger and modeled after California's In-N-Out Burger, will feature a narrow, burger-centric menu with fresh ingredients cooked to order. Mr. Majewski says buns will be baked on the premises. Burger patties will be packed by hand daily from fresh, never-frozen beef, and fetch about $3.25 apiece at the counter.

"You can't get a good (quick-service burger) in Chicago," he says.

It's a noble goal, to be sure. West Coast burgers have us trounced, hands-down. Of course, I'd be a whole lot more excited if an actual In 'n Out were coming to Chicago, but I look forward to giving this a shot.

Ditto on JJ's quality. Only eaten there twice, and was supremely underwhelmed. The biggest selling point seems to be that they're cheap.

Chain from SF, an cynical Haight-Ashbury-goes-corporate thing. Haight Ashbury is sad. Haight Ashbury themed burger chain is real sad. Luckily, we live in a bona fide City that moves on from that sort of thing rather than turning cultural ephemera into a tourist franchise. (See Old Town.)

Ate at a Hamburger Mary's while living in Portland, OR in the late 90's. If you like bicycles and baseball mitts hanging from the ceiling and food as an after-thought then this is the place for you. I had a hamburger and it was just kind of like ehh...

on the subject of west coast burgers, tho' i've only been twice, i found hamburger nirvana at tommy's, in LA. i don't suspect they're going to open up a midwest outpost anytime soon. but i know of nowhere were i can get a double-chili-cheeseburger in these parts. how LA, where healthfood purports to reign, can have such a creation, while chicago does not strikes me as odd, to say the least.

Yeah, sorry, kinda rude and crude around my house before the superautomaticahas cranked to life.

Let's just say I can't stand the fact that the only loop FF place open past 7pm on State Street near Jackson is JJ's.

    Ahhhh....that's better.

jayritchie, welcome, although I see you have been around since April, I encourage you to post Chicago style, early and often, and not let early morning gruffs get in your way.

You should note that Chicago magazine also puts out a blast email newsletter once a week called Dish. You can sign up for it here Because the have "trained professionals" out there doing investigative work they are a good source for new openings. Of course, given the immediacy of LTH Forum, we sometimes have a scoop.

Sorry, no information on the new hamburger joint.

I am excited to see Hamburger Mary opening in Andersonville, though I recall something on their construction sign that tempered my excitement...perhaps a line about "gourmet" burgers. Sorry to see Cafe Boost, that was in that space had closed. My offer to trade one of the four gay bars on the South of Foster side of Andersonville (SoFo) for one of the four, now three, coffee shops on the North of Foster end (NoFo) is still good. I would even take Taste of Heaven

JJ's may not be a Bari's or Hannah's Bretzel, but, in my opinion, of the big three cold sandwich chains (Subway, Mr. Sub, and JJ), it's by far the best.

I'm afraid that's a little too much like the tallest midget in the circus award

However, FWIW, I would go back to Subway over JJ's. although Subway's vary according to the manager.

In N Out was mentioned in Fast Food Nation as an alternative to McDonald's: that you can be successful selling a good, quality hamburger, fries and milkshake and pay your employees more than the minimum wage. Even though I can't stand JJ, I would give Mr. Majewski's new store a try. I am always looking for a good quality hamburger.

According to the article in the new Chicago Magazine article (no you did not imagine it), the place will be called Patty Burger and it will be located at 112 S. Michigan. The place has no affiliation to Jimmy John's except for the fact that the former CFO owns the place. As it's close to my office, I too am looking forward to trying it.

According to Metromix Patty Burger Target opening date: mid-April

    Patty Burger
    72 E. Adams St.

We can't wait until this burger spot opens in the Loop; we said we were giving up fast food, not made-to-order burgers for our New Year's resolution, right? Gregg Majewski, ex-top exec with Jimmy John's (he still owns 15 stores in Ohio and Alabama and also owns Jersey's Pizza and Grill in Hoffman Estates) is opening this "fresh burger" operation in March. Patty Burger will feature hand-formed Angus beef burgers with toppings like lettuce and secret sauce; add-ons include bacon, mushrooms and avocado. Burgers take less than four minutes to prep and will be priced under $4. Other menu choices include a veggie burger, fries and milkshakes (breakfast sandwiches will also be offered). The décor will resemble an old-school diner, but will be more modern (read less cheesy). Target opening date: mid-April

Yes, but what if the hamburgers don't reflect the quality of JJ sandwiches? What if the In-And-Out or Tommy's experience is genuinely duplicated? That would be a different matter entirely, and something to get excited about.

I'm kinda scratching my head on the interest in the "JJ burger saga."

I figure there'll be plenty of mass media advertising upon it's opening. We're not talking some super-secret, hole-in-the-wall, special handshake place.

Read the weeklies, watch some TV...you'll know when they open.

As an architect, I'm familiar with the "reality" of construction schedules, but "mid April" to "sometime after August" - yikes! This is costing someone some cash - let's hope the food is good.

As for 'west coast burgers': I've only had In-n-Out in Vegas, and it was a nice alternative, but didn't 'wow' me. I do like the fresh cut fries, though. All in all, if I'm going to have ground up cow smushed into a disk, heated and placed on a bun, I'm going to go for the whole enchilada and go for a "Moody's beer garden" type experience. (If I'm getting a quick lunch or dinner, I'd rather eat at a taqueria than fast food burgers, so I may not be the target market anyway.)

Another thing, for years, that strip of Michigan facing the park seems to have been a lousy place for shops and food - it will be interesting to see if Millenium park changes that in the long run...
