Yesterday morning, I had kũay tĩaw pèt pa low* from Sanamluang Cafe on the brain and I needed to do something about it. And, lately it would seem that I have fairly reliable recourse if I have a yen for a particular Thai dish that is not readily available in Chicago: the kitchen at Aroy Thai.

After arriving at Aroy Thai, and after a brief discussion with the kitchen staff, I was regretfully informed that I was not going to get an easy break; I would instead have to settle for Aroy's closest match, bà-mìi pèt**, or "egg noodle soup with roasted duck."

    bà-mìi pèt

You have had egg noodle soup with roasted duck from one of the Chinese shops in town, right? Well, this one was fairly similar. It is just that it was done up "Thai-style." Here, the broth had been laced with fried garlic, fish sauce, scallion, cilantro, and powdered chile.

Was it good? Oh, yes, it was very good. I actually preferred it to the standard Chinese versions around town.

Was it what I was loooking for? No, not by any means. But, the kitchen has assured me that my ship will come in ...
